Important:  This article only applies to you if you manage your own DNS records. If you have changed your nameservers to point to Microsoft 365, you can use any DNS hosting provider.

If you manage your own DNS records and your DNS host does not support all the DNS records that Office 365 operated by 21Vianet needs, some Microsoft 365 features won’t work. We recommend that you transfer your domain to a providers that support all required DNS records.

To see what won’t work if a specific record type isn’t supported at your provider, click the link for the record type:

Providers that support all required DNS records

  • HiChina - http://www.net.cn

  • DNSPod

  • Oray.com

  • east.net - http://www.east.net

Limitations if SRV records are not supported

If SRV records are not supported, the following Microsoft 365 features are not available.

  • Lync IM and presence integration with Outlook Web App

  • Authenticated user sign-in with Lync Web App

  • External communication (federation) with Lync users in other organizations.

Limitations if multiple CNAME records are not supported

Several domain hosting providers, including 1&1 Internet and Dynadot, only support one CNAME record. If your domain is hosted at one of these providers, you will have to choose between the following features:

  • Mail desktop clients and mobile clients can use Autodiscover to automatically find the Exchange Online service so that users can sign-in without having to enter a server name

  • Lync desktop clients can use Autodiscover to automatically find the Skype for Business Online service so that users can sign-in without having to enter a server name

  • Lync mobile clients can use Autodiscover to automatically find the Skype for Business Online service so that users can sign-in without having to enter a server name

Limitations if SPF/TXT records are not supported

If SPF/TXT records are not supported, other people may be able to use your domain to send spam or other malicious email. SPF records work by identifying the servers that are authorized to send email from your domain.

Limitations if redirection is not supported (Office 365 Small Business, when you manage your own DNS records)

If you manage DNS for your domain at your DNS hosting provider, and your DNS hosting provider does not support redirection, users won’t be able to get to your public website by typing your domain name without typing “www”; for example, http://contoso.com. Learn more about redirection.

Note:  You can purchase redirection from another company and use it to redirect your website address without the “www” to your full website address, even if you keep your domain with a DNS hosting provider that doesn’t support redirection.

Limitations if redirection is not supported (Office 365 Midsize Business or Office 365 Enterprise)

If redirection is not supported, users won’t be able to get to your public website by typing your domain name without typing “www”; for example, http://contoso.com. Learn more about redirection.

Note:  You can purchase redirection from another company and use it to redirect your website address without the “www” to your full website address, even if you keep your domain with a DNS hosting provider that doesn’t support redirection.
