Symptoms
Equation placeholders don't appear in your document on the screen or in print.
Cause
Equation placeholders are small, dotted boxes in an equation 
Resolution
To view the placeholders, select an alternate view.
On the View tab, click one of the following views:

Web Layout
-
Outline
-
Draft
