By default, when you run the Microsoft Office 2010 Setup program on a computer with earlier versions of Office installed, the earlier versions of Office are removed, and you might not receive a message stating that the earlier version is being removed.

If you click Upgrade in the Microsoft Office <suite name> 2010 Setup dialog box, you might see the following description:

Install Microsoft Office based on your current Office configuration, and remove previous versions of Office from your computer.

Important:  Although we do not recommend installing and using more than one version of Office on a single computer, you can do so if you aren’t quite ready to upgrade all of your Office programs. For example, you can install and use both Office 2007 and Office 2010 on the same computer.

What do you want to do?

Keep earlier versions of Office programs

Method 1: Use the Keep all previous versions option

  1. Run the Office 2010 Setup program, and then click Custom.

  2. On the Upgrade tab, click Keep all previous versions.

Method 2: Use the Remove only the following applications option

  1. Run the Office 2010 Setup program, and then click Custom.

  2. On the Upgrade tab, click Remove only the following applications.

  3. Clear the check boxes next to the programs that you want to keep.
