Insert a YouTube video

If there is a video on YouTube that you want to play in your presentation, here is how to do it.

To play the YouTube video, you first need to install a couple of updates.

See the details in this article, Requirements for using the PowerPoint YouTube feature. There is a link to it in the course summary at the end of this course.

One other thing, since a YouTube video streams to play in a presentation, you need an Internet connection to insert and play it.

So, let's insert the video.

In PowerPoint, display the slide you want the video on, then click the INSERT tab, Video, Online Video.

In the YouTube search box, type the video name, or a key word or phrase, if you don't have a title.

Then click Search. You get a bunch of possible videos.

To get more details about a video, point to it for a screen tip, and to play a preview, click the View Larger icon.

Click Play to preview the video and drag on the play bar, if you want to look ahead.

When you have found your video, click Insert.

The video is inserted on the slide. To resize it, while keeping it centered, press and hold Ctrl as you drag a corner sizing handle.

Now, there is another way you can insert a YouTube video, starting from the YouTube site in case you want to search for the video there.

Once you have found the video you want on YouTube, underneath the video window, click Share, then click Embed.

The embed code for the video is displayed and selected. We want to copy that.

So, I'll right-click it and click Copy.

In PowerPoint, with the destination slide displayed, I click the INSERT tab, Video, Online Video. In the From a Video Embed Code box, we now right-click and click Paste.

The embed code is pasted in. Now we click the insert arrow.

The video is inserted.

One difference with the video you insert with embed code is that it has a black frame at the start.

I'll press and hold Ctrl while I drag the video from a corner to enlarge it, and keep it centered.

To see the video while in Normal view, right-click it, and click Preview.

Let's click Slide Show to play it in the slide show view.

After a brief second, we see the video's still frame and get a play button. I'll click it.

"Yesterday was", the video plays directly from YouTube, and it has the YouTube controls for playing, pausing, and so on.

You now have some solid tools for playing video in a presentation.
