  1. Double-check that you're connected to the Internet.

  2. On your Dock, choose the Lync icon A picture of the Lync icon that appears on your dock..

  3. When prompted, choose Use Lync if you want to make and receive telephone calls through it. Otherwise, choose Don't change.

If you want to use Lync for telephone calls, choose Use Lync.

  4. At the Lync for Mac 2011 sign in page, choose Advanced at the bottom of the page after entering your Microsoft 365 user ID (which is also your email address) in both the Email Address box and the User ID box, and your password.

At the Lync sign in, enter your user ID and password, and choose Advanced at the bottom.

  5. Under Authentication, clear the Use Kerberos box so it's blank.

  6. Under Connection Settings, choose Automatic and OK.

  7. Back at the Sign in page, choose Sign In.

    Important:

    • If you get a message that sign in failed, doublecheck your password and your Internet connection. If you continue to get the message, it could be that the connection is slow because of a lot of traffic on the Internet. Try again; it can take a few times to get through.

    • If you continue to have problems, see Fix problems with setup or signing in.

    3. Choose OK.

    4. Trying signing in again.

  • If you get the message "Lync was unable to sign in. Please verify your logon credentials and try again" or "The service might not be available," the issue might be a connection can't be established with Lync.

Author's note: when I tested these instructions from home, where my Internet service isn't very good, I wasn't able to connect and kept getting errors, even after trying for 30 minutes. But the next day I could connect. When I tested the instructions at work, the connection worked the first time.

  • If you still can't connect, or for other issues, see Troubleshoot sign in issues with Lync for Mac 2011 in Skype for Business Online.
