To alert users to new activity in conversations they follow, Yammer sends notifications either by email, or—for users with mobile devices—through push notifications.
To avoid overloading users with notifications, Yammer generates email or push notifications only when users don't go to Yammer to read the new message after a specific delay interval.
If you received a notification but didn't respond by reading the new activity on Yammer, you won't receive further notifications for the same thread. This prevents notifications from piling up when you are away from Yammer for a length of time.
When are email and push notifications sent?
By default, email notifications and push notifications are sent after a short delay when the following changes happen. For information about the notification delay logic, see the FAQs section.
A new group announcement is posted.
Someone mentions you on Yammer.
Someone is added to a direct message.
A non-group participant is added to a private group conversation.
A message thread conversation in your Yammer Inbox goes from read to unread.
Someone replies directly to your message.
Someone sends you a new direct message.
Control which notifications you get in email
In Yammer, click the Yammer settings icon .
Click Edit Settings, and then click Notifications.
If you are a member of multiple networks, you must change notifications on each network. Click a network name to see the notifications.
Select the notifications you want, and then click Save.
Q: How does an All Company announcement differ from a group announcement?
A: All Company announcements are immediately sent to all users' Yammer Inboxes and to all users via email regardless of their notification settings.
Group announcements also immediately generate notifications to the Yammer Inboxes of all group members, but only send email notifications to users if:
The user has selected to email when they receive content in their Yammer Inbox.
The user has not yet read the announcement post in Yammer web or mobile applications, within the specific delay interval explained in the next FAQ.
Q: What is the notification delay logic?
A: The length of the notification delay interval (the time Yammer waits for a user to read new content before sending a notification) depends on whether the user accesses Yammer from a computer or a mobile device.
If a user is on a computer and is active on the web, email notifications are delayed for 15 minutes. Notifications to users on mobile applications have a 20-minute delay.
Q: When does a thread become an unread push notification?
A: A push notification (subject to delay logic) goes out when there is activity on any Yammer Inbox conversation that makes the thread state change from read to unread AND is not a direct reply, an @mention, or a private message.
Q: Can I post to Yammer via email?
A: Yes. You can email to a Yammer group or Yammer user, and you can reply to a notification email.
To email a new message or forward a message to a Yammer group, use the email address email@example.com. If there are spaces or punctuation marks in the group name, just omit them. For example, if your Yammer domain is Contoso.com, and you want to email to the Marketing Team, use the address firstname.lastname@example.org.
To make sure you get the address correct, you can look up the group's email address. On the home page of a Yammer group, in the Access Options section, select Post to this group by email, and you'll see the address.
To email a new message or forward a message to an individual on Yammer, use the email address first_part_of_user's_Yammer_email_addressemail@example.com. For example, to send a mail to Yammer to LisaG@Contoso.com, use the email address firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: I'm subscribed to a group via email. What happens to my group subscription?
A: When you subscribe to a group by email you will receive notifications for new conversations in that group, direct replies, @mentions, and when a message reply causes a thread to go from seen to unseen.
Q: How do I control settings for push notifications on my phone?
These settings are available in the Yammer app for some phones. On the phone, select the menu for the Yammer app, and look in the settings.
Q: Can admins set default email settings for a network?
A: No, the only email settings an admin can change is whether emails sent by Yammer must be confirmed before sending, and the logo included in email messages that Yammer sends. Users can control their own email notification settings.
