Viewing the digital fingerprint for an identity

SharePoint Workspace assigns a unique "digital fingerprint" to each identity you create in your account. A digital fingerprint appears as a long, random looking string of letters and numbers (with punctuation marks for readability). Other users may ask you to tell them your digital fingerprint in order to verify your identity before they share information with you. You can also use digital fingerprints to verify the identities of other SharePoint Workspace users.

If necessary, select the identity you want from the drop-down menu to display its associated Digital Fingerprint. If you have only one identity in your account, which is typical, you will not see a drop-down menu.

Selecting or viewing communication policies associated with an identity

Communication policies help you verify the identities of other users. For example, policies can signal SharePoint Workspace to warn you before you communicate with people who do not have the required verification, or simply disallow communication in this case.

Note: An administrator may have already set fixed communication policies for your identity.

The table below describes the communication policy options that appear on the Security tab:

Communication policy

Result

Allow me to communicate with: Any contact without warning or restriction (default).

SharePoint Workspace issues no warnings or restrictions regardless of your contacts' verification status.

Allow me to communicate with: Any contact but warn me when communicating with contacts who are not verified or certified.

SharePoint Workspace issues a warning before you communicate with any contact who does not satisfy the verification requirements. The warning displays in the Contact Verification Alert dialog box, which provides an option for verifying these users.

Allow me to communicate with: Only contacts who are certified by my administrator.

SharePoint Workspace prohibits communication with any contact who does satisfy the verification requirements. In this case, all contacts you interact with must be certified by an administrator.

Setting file restrictions for an identity

For security purposes, you can enforce restricting certain types of files in 2010 Documents or 2007 Files tools, or as attachments in other tools such as Discussion or messages. The types of allowed file types are the same as those specified in Microsoft Office as "safe for sharing".

To enable file restrictions, check Block restricted file types.

To see a list of the restricted file types, click View restricted types.

Note: Management policies may not allow you to disable this option.

Setting workspace version restrictions for an identity

You can select an option that applies the following workspace version restrictions:

  • You can only create workspaces that can be used in the Microsoft Office Groove 2007 or later.

  • You can only be invited to workspaces that were created in Microsoft Office Groove 2007 or later.

You might enable this option if you want to ensure that you use only the recent and secure Groove tools.

Note: Policies applied to your identity may prevent you from changing the current setting of this option. For more information, see your administrator.
