Add hyperlinks to slides

Add links to your presentation to show related information on the web, quickly get to a different slide, or start an email message.

Link to a website

  1. Select the text, shape, or picture that you want to use as a hyperlink.

  2. Select Insert > Hyperlink.

  3. Select Existing File or Web Page, and add the:

    • Text to display - Type the text that you want to appear for your hyperlink.

    • ScreenTip - Type the text that you want to appear when the user hovers over the hyperlink (optional).

    • Current Folder, Browsed Pages, or Recent Files - Select where you want to link to.

    • Address - If you haven't already selected a location above, cut and paste, or type the URL for the web site you want to link to.

      Note: If you link to a file on your computer, and move your PowerPoint presentation to another computer, you'll also need to move any linked files.

  4. Select OK.

Link to a place in a document, new document, or email address

  1. Select the text, shape, or picture that you want to use as a hyperlink.

  2. Select Insert > Hyperlink and select an option:

    • Place in This Document - Link to a specific slide in your presentation.

    • Create New Document - Link from your presentation to another presentation.

    • E-mail Address - Link a displayed email address to open up a user's email program.

  3. Fill in the Text to display, ScreenTip, and where you want to link to.

  4. Select OK.

Add a hyperlink to a slide

You can create a link within your presentation that when clicked can do things like open up your web browser to a specific address, or jump to another point of your presentation.

Let's see how this works.

I'm still here on the first slide of my presentation and I want add a link to my hotel's website so that I can easily get there with one click, instead of having to first switch to my web browser and type in the address.

You can turn both text or images into links.

I'm going to go to the Insert menu and click the Text Box button, and I'll drag to create a box here in the lower left-hand corner.

And I'll type in some text.

And the text here doesn't have to be the actual address, it can be anything you want.

But now I want to make it interactive.

I'll select the text and now go back up to the Insert tab, and here I'll find the Hyperlink button.

And here we have several options.

At the very top is Text to display in field.

This one shows you the text in the text box.

You'll only see this text here if you're adding a link to text and not to an image.

But you can change the text from here too.

For example, maybe I'll make the L in Landonhotel lowercase.

And we'll see the result in a moment.

You can also add a ScreenTip, and this is where you specify what text will pop up when you roll your mouse over the link.

Alright, then you need to specify what clicking this link will do by selecting on of the options here on the left.

This first one is for linking to a website or a file.

If you want to create a link that opens up a file stored on your computer, you can select this option, and then browse to select the file you want to use.

Just bear in mind that if you move this presentation to another computer, you'll need to remember to move the file with it.

But in this case I want to link to a website.

Now you can visit the site first in your web browser, and copy the address and paste it in here, or you can just type it.

I'll type, --notice as soon as I do that it automatically formats the address properly for me with the http:// at the beginning-- and I'll just type the rest of the address landonhotel.com and I'll click OK.

You can see it's now a blue, underlined text link.

Now to test that, you can go into Slideshow view and notice when I roll my mouse over the link you can see the Screen Tip Text I entered appears here.

And when I click it, I'm switched over to my web browser and the site loads.

Let's go back to PowerPoint.

Press Escape.

So that's how to turn text into a link to a website.

Let's take a look at some of the other options.

For this example, I'll select the image here on the slide, and again I'll click the Hyperlink button.

The second option here is Place in This Document.

This let's you create links to specific points or slides in your presentation.

So for example, maybe on the last slide of my presentation I could create a link on an image that instantly took me back to the first slide of the presentation, just by selecting First Slide here.

Or under the Slide Title section, you'll find each slide in your presentation listed and you can select a specific slide to link to.

This can be great for creating interactive presentations where users will see different information or view your presentation in a different order depending on what choices they click.

The third option is for creating a new document.

So if you want a link from your presentation to another new presentation, you can do that.

And the fourth option is for creating an e-mail link.

This lets you create a link that will pop open the user's email program with the address you specify here already filled out in the To field and the Subject field.

So hyperlinks aren't just good for linking to websites from PowerPoint, you can use them to make your presentations a lot more interactive as well.
