What is Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams meetings?
Whiteboard integration in Microsoft Teams meetings is powered by the Whiteboard Web App (Preview), which lets participants of Teams meetings draw, sketch, and write together on a shared digital canvas.
Note: The Whiteboard integration in Teams meetings is currently in Commercial Preview, available for Microsoft Teams on Windows 10, iOS, Android, and on the Web. It must be enabled in the Office 365 Admin Center. For detailed instructions for administrators, see Enable Microsoft Whiteboard for your organization.
How do I get started with a whiteboard in a Teams meeting?
You can share a whiteboard to make it available to all participants in a Teams meeting. That same whiteboard is simultaneously available in all of the Whiteboard applications on Windows 10, iOS, and the Web App (Preview).
After joining a Teams meeting, click the Share icon in the share tray of that meeting.
In the Whiteboard section, select Microsoft Whiteboard.
Note: The ability to start a new whiteboard is currently limited to the Microsoft Teams clients on Windows 10 and on the Web. The Teams iOS and Android apps can only view whiteboards that have already been created. The ability to start a new whiteboard will be added to the Teams iOS and Android apps later in 2019.
How do you use ink on a whiteboard in a Teams meeting?
A soon as the Whiteboard canvas has been started, Teams meeting attendees will be able to ink on it. To begin, click the Pencil icon, select a color, and then begin to draw, sketch, or write on the board.
You can also choose to open the same whiteboard in the native Microsoft Whiteboard app on Windows 10 to add additional types of content to the canvas.
How do I add other content types to the whiteboard in a Teams meeting?
Whiteboard in Teams meetings currently only supports inking together on the digital canvas from within Teams. We will be adding additional content types to the Whiteboard Web App (Preview), which powers the Whiteboard in Teams meetings experience.
For richer functionality, Teams meeting attendees can open the whiteboard they’re editing in the full-featured Microsoft Whiteboard app on Windows 10 to add other content types and use additional features. These changes will appear in the whiteboard being edited in the Teams meeting.
Can I access and continue working on a whiteboard after a Teams meeting ends?
After a Teams meeting, its whiteboard will be available to all participants from the Teams meeting chat, in a tab labeled Whiteboard. The whiteboard will also be available in the Board Picker in the Whiteboard for Windows 10 app, so that meeting attendees can continue collaborating on a whiteboard even after a meeting has ended.
Note: This capability is currently not available in the Microsoft Teams iOS and Android apps. We will be rolling this feature out to those apps later in 2019. In the meantime, you can work on whiteboards after their Teams meetings have concluded by using the Microsoft Teams clients on Windows 10 or on the Web.
Can anyone start or ink on a whiteboard in a Teams meeting?
Teams meeting attendees within the same Office 365 tenant will be able to start, view, and ink on whiteboards in Teams meetings.
Whiteboard in Teams meetings does not currently support starting a new whiteboard, view the whiteboard, or inking by anonymous, federated, or external users. We will provide information to customers when this becomes available.
Can I get Whiteboard in Teams meetings on my Surface Hub?
This feature is currently in Preview and available to users signed into Whiteboard. See Enable Microsoft Whiteboard on Surface Hub for information about installing the latest version of Whiteboard on Surface Hub.
When joining a Teams meeting, sign in to Whiteboard or Surface Hub, and then click the Whiteboard icon in the meeting controls to share the whiteboard.
Note: If you add any content to Whiteboard without being signed in and then use the Whiteboard icon in Teams to try and share it, a new empty board will be created and shared with the meeting. (The prior whiteboard will still be synced to your list of whiteboards.)
Will the Whiteboard in Teams integration be available for Microsoft Teams Room?
Whiteboard in Teams meetings will be available for Microsoft Teams Rooms later in 2019. We will provide additional information to customers when this becomes available.
When will Whiteboard be available for One-on-One Teams meetings?
Currently, Whiteboard in Teams meetings is available for scheduled and ad hoc meetings of 3 or more participants. Support for Whiteboard in one-on-one Teams meetings will be available later in 2019. We will provide additional information to customers when this becomes available.
How can I enable Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams meetings for my organization?
To use Whiteboard in Teams meetings, the Whiteboard Web App (Preview) must be enabled by your organization’s Office 365 administrator. For detailed instructions for administrators, see Enable Microsoft Whiteboard for your organization.
Once enabled, commercial customers will be able to use Whiteboard in Teams meetings from the Microsoft Teams clients on Windows 10, iOS, Android, and on the Web.
