Use Learning Tools in the Edge browser

Learning Tools are built into the Windows 10 Edge browser, adding more options for readers in your class to interact with texts. Use Learning Tools in Edge to hear any webpage, PDF, or ePub read out loud while following along with the words on screen. Readers can also boost text readability by adjusting font and line spacing in ePub books. Reading View in Edge now has Learning Tools features such as read aloud, page colors, text size, syllables, parts of speech highlighting.

Read a webpage

To launch Read aloud, right-click on any word on the webpage and select Read aloud. Read aloud will begin automatically reading at the word you selected.

A ribbon toolbar will appear at the top of the page after you launch Read aloud. The toolbar includes the Play button, buttons to skip to the next or previous paragraph, and a button to adjust your Voice settings. Voice settings allow you to select from different Microsoft voices as well as change the speed of the reader.

Read aloud highlights each word on the webpage as it's being read. To stop listening, select the Pause button or the X to close Read aloud.

Tip: Another way to access Read aloud is to select the Settings and more O365_EDU_Edge_More_Options icon, and then Read aloud.

The reader will begin reading from the first word of the document and highlight each word as it goes along.

Customize and read an ePub

Read EPUBs books in Microsoft Edge—whether downloaded from the web, which you can save with the latest Windows update, or purchased from the Microsoft Store. You’ll also find reading suggestions at the Books tab in the “Hub” menu.

ePub files now have syllables and parts of speech capabilities. This is in addition to the existing read aloud, line spacing and page colors. As well, ePub files work without the internet, providing an equitable offline solution for those without high-speed internet at home.

Free e-books in .epub format you open from the web will automatically open in Microsoft Edge. Select the top of the page to view your ePub toolbar. Select Options  O365_EDU_Learning_Tools_Options_glyph to adjust font size, style, theme, and the amount of spacing between lines and letters. Select the Read aloud  O365_Learning_Tools_Read_Aloud_glyph icon to begin listening.
