Use a screen reader to view and navigate a profile in Skype (version 8)

This article is for people with visual impairments who use a screen reader program with the Office products and is part of the Office Accessibility content set. For more general help, see Office Support home.

Use Skype with your keyboard and a screen reader, such as NVDA or Narrator, the built-in Windows screen reader, to view and navigate the profile of a contact or someone you have chatted with. From the profile, you can, for example, start calls or conversations, block or delete a contact, or change chat settings.

Notes:

  • This topic assumes that you are using the built-in Windows screen reader, Narrator. To learn more about using Narrator, go to Complete guide to Narrator.

  • This topic assumes you are using this app with a PC. Some navigation and gestures might be different for a Windows phone or tablet.

View a profile

  1. In Skype, press either Alt+1 to open the Chats list, or Alt+2 to open the Contacts list, depending on if you want to view the profile of a Skype contact or a chat session.

  2. In the Chats or Contacts list, navigate to the contact whose profile you want to view, and press Shift+F10 to open the context menu. You hear: "Add to favorites."

  3. Press the Down arrow key until you hear "View profile," and press Enter. The User profile dialog opens.

Navigate a profile

You can access many actions from the profile of a contact or someone you've chatted with.

Note: Not all actions are supported for all profiles.

Add a contact to favorites

  1. In a profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Add to favorites," and press Enter. Chats or contacts selected as favorites show up at the top of the SkypeChats or Contacts list.

Rename a contact

  1. In a profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Name," followed by the current name of the contact.

  2. Enter the new name for the contact. Your changes are saved automatically.

Note: Changing the name of a contact only changes how their name appears to you.

Start a chat or call

To start a chat or a call with a contact, do one of the following:

  • To send a message, press the Tab key until you hear "Send message," and then press Enter to open a chat pane with the contact.

  • To start a private conversation, press the Tab key until you hear "Start private conversation," and then press Enter to send an invitation to a private conversation. Messages, media files, and calls in a private conversation are encrypted.

  • To start a call, press the Tab key until you hear "Start call," and then press Enter.

  • To start a video call, press the Tab key until you hear "Start video call," and then press Enter.

Start a translated chat

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Start translator," and then press Enter to create a new translated chat.

  2. In the translated chat, the Skype Translator bot sends a message for both users in the chat. These messages are in the form of cards which contain buttons for changing the language and voice settings for that person. To change these settings, navigate to the correct message in the chat with the Up and Down arrow keys, then press the Tab key until you hear "Change language" or "Change voice," depending on what you want to do, and press Enter.

  3. The Skype Translator bot sends a new card with additional buttons corresponding to the setting you want to change. Navigate to the message in the chat with the Up and Down arrow keys, press the Tab key until you hear the option you want, and then press Enter to select it.

Create a new group

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Create new group with," followed by the name of the contact, and then press Enter. You hear: "Create new group, search."

  2. The Create new group dialog contains a Search box, a list of current group members and a list of suggested members. To move between them, press the Tab and Shift+Tab keys. To filter the list of suggested members, enter your search string into the Search box. To add a suggested member to the team, navigate to the correct entry in the list with the Up and Down arrow keys and then press Spacebar.

  3. When you are finished with adding group members, press the Tab key until you hear "Done," and then press Enter to create the group.

Send or request funds

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Send and request money," and press Enter. The user profile is closed and the Money pane opens.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To send money:

      1. Press the Tab key until you hear "Send money," and press Enter. The Where can I send money? view opens.

      2. Press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and press Enter. The Send money view opens. You hear "Currency," followed by the currently selected currency. Select the currency you want by pressing the Up and Down arrow keys.

      3. Enter the amount you want to send using the number keys, then press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and then press Enter. The Choose card view opens.

      4. Choose the card you want to accompany your funds by pressing the Tab key until you hear the one you want, then pressing Enter.

      5. Press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and then press Enter.

        You need to log in to PayPal to finish the transaction. You hear: "Continue to PayPal." Press Enter to move to PayPal, then log in with your credentials and follow the provided instructions.

      6. When the payment is complete, the sent money will appear as a card in the chat window.

    • To request money:

      1. Press the Tab key until you hear "Request money," and press Enter. The Request money view opens.

      2. Press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and press Enter.

      3. You hear "Currency," followed by the currently selected currency. Select the currency you want by pressing the Up and Down arrow keys.

      4. Enter the amount you want to request using the number keys, then press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and then press Enter.

      5. You hear "You are requesting," followed by the amount requested and the name of the user. To send the request, press Enter.

        To add an optional note with your request, press Shift+Tab until you hear "Enter optional note for request," enter your note, and then press the Tab key until you hear: "Request money." To send the request, press Enter.

        The request for funds is shown in the chat window as a card, which contains the current status of the request. To close the Money view, press the Tab key until you hear "Back to chat," and then press Enter.

Note: Sending or requesting funds is only available to customers in certain countries.

Use the Chat gallery

The Chat gallery contains photos, files, and web links shared in a chat. You can use it to easily browse previously shared content, and to add more.

  1. In a profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Open Chat gallery," and then press Enter. The profile is closed and the Chat gallery opens.

  2. To filter the contents of the Chat gallery, press the Tab key until you hear "Media filter menu," and then press Enter. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select which option you want, then press Enter to select it.

  3. To share a file, press the Tab key until you hear "Drop here to share," and press Enter. The Open dialogue opens. Select the file you wish to share, press the Tab key until you hear "Open," and then press Enter.

Configure chat settings

You can access the settings from a chat profile. You can toggle notifications on and off, or delete an entire conversation. If you have opened a private chat, you can also toggle notifications for the private chat separately, delete the private chat, or end the private chat, which lets you continue chatting without end-to-end encryption.

  • In a chat profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Chat settings," and press Enter.

  • Press the Tab key until you hear the setting you want, and then press Enter to select it.

Delete or block a contact

  • To delete a contact:

    1. In a profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Delete contact," and then press Enter. The Delete contact window opens.

    2. Press Enter to confirm the deletion.

  • To block a contact:

    • In a user profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Block contact," and then press Enter.

    • Press the Tab key until you hear: "Report abuse from this person." If you want to report abuse, press Spacebar to toggle the option. To select a reason for your report, press the Tab key until you hear the option you want and press Spacebar again.

    • Press the Tab key until you hear "Block," and then press Enter.

Use Skype with your keyboard and VoiceOver, the built-in Mac OS screen reader, to view and navigate the profile of a contact or someone you have chatted with. From the profile, you can, for example, start calls or conversations, block or delete a contact, and open the Chat gallery that stores all files and links shared in each chat.

View a profile

  1. In Skype, press Command+Shift+C to open the Contacts list. If you want to open the Chats list instead, press Command+Shift+C, press the Left arrow key until you hear "Chats," and press Return.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • In Chats, press the Tab key until you hear the name and time of the most recent chat, and then use the Down and Up arrow keys to navigate to the chat you seek. When you find it, press Control+Option+Shift+M to open the context menu.

    • In Contacts, press the Tab key until you hear "Invite to Skype," and then use the Down and Up arrow keys to navigate to the contact you seek. When you find it, press Control+Option+Shift+M to open the context menu.

  3. Press the Down arrow key until you hear "View profile," and press Return. The user profile opens.

Navigate a profile

You can access many actions from the profile of someone you've chatted with or a contact.

Note: Not all actions are supported for all profiles.

Add a contact to favorites

  1. In a profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Add to favorites," and press Control+Option+Spacebar. Chats or contacts selected as favorites show up at the top of the Chats or Contacts list.

Rename a contact

  1. In a profile, press the Tab key until you hear the current name of the contact, followed by "Contents selected, name."

  2. Type the new name for the contact. Your changes are saved automatically.

Note: Changing the name of a contact only changes how their name appears to you.

Start a chat or call

To start a chat or a call with a contact, do one of the following:

  • To send a message, press the Tab key until you hear "Send message," and then press Return to open a chat pane with the contact.

  • To start a private conversation, press the Tab key until you hear "Start private conversation," and then press Return to send an invitation to a private conversation. Messages, media files, and calls in a private conversation are encrypted.

  • To start a call, press the Tab key until you hear "Start call," and then press Return.

  • To start a video call, press the Tab key until you hear "Start video call," and then press Return.

Start a translated chat

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Start translator," and then press Return to create a new translated chat.

  2. In the translated chat, the Skype Translator bot sends a message for both users in the chat. These messages are in the form of cards which contain buttons for changing the language and voice settings for that person. To change these settings, press Control+Option+Left arrow key until you hear: "End of, Skype Translator, You're all set." Navigate to the correct card in the chat with the Up and Down arrow keys, then press the Tab key until you hear "Change language" or "Change voice," depending on what you want to do, and press Return.

  3. The Skype Translator bot sends a new card with additional buttons corresponding to the setting you want to change. Navigate to the card in the chat with the Down arrow key, press the Tab key until you hear the option you want, and then press Return to select it.

Create a new group

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Create new group with," followed by the name of the contact, and then press Return. You hear: "Create new group, search."

  2. The Create new group dialog contains a Search box, a list of current group members and a list of suggested members. To move between them, press the Tab and Shift+Tab keys. To filter the list of suggested members, press Return when the focus is on the Search button and type your search string. To add a suggested member to the team, navigate to the correct entry in the list with the Up and Down arrow keys, and then press Return.

  3. When you are finished with adding group members, press the Tab key until you hear "Done," and then press Return to create the group.

Send funds

Note: Sending funds is only available to customers in certain countries.

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Send and request money," and press Return. The user profile is closed and the Money pane opens.

  2. Press the Tab key until you hear "Send money," and press Return. The Where can I send money? view opens.

  3. Press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and press Return.

  4. You hear the currently selected currency. To change it, find the currency you want by pressing the Up and Down arrow keys, and then press Control+Option+Spacebar to make the selection.

  5. Enter the amount you want to send using the number keys, then press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and press Return. The Choose card view opens.

  6. To choose the card you want to accompany your funds, press the Tab key until you find the one you want, and press Return.

  7. Press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and press Return.

    You hear: "Continue to PayPal." Press Return, then log in with your credentials and follow the provided instructions.

  8. When the payment is complete, the sent money appears as a card in the chat window.

Request funds

Note: Requesting funds is only available to customers in certain countries.

  1. In a contact profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Send and request money," and press Return. The user profile is closed and the Money pane opens.

  2. Press the Tab key until you hear "Request money," and press Return. The Request money view opens.

  3. Press the Tab key until you hear "Continue," and press Return.

  2. Press the Tab key until you hear "Delete," and press Return to confirm the deletion.

Block a contact

  1. In a user profile, press the Tab key until you hear "Block contact," and then press Return.

  2. If you want to report abuse, press the Tab key until you hear "Report abuse from this person," and press Control+Option+Spacebar. To select a reason for your report, press the Tab key until you hear the option you want, and press Control+Option+Spacebar again.

  3. Press the Tab key until you hear "Block," and press Return.

      4. Enter the amount you want to send using the number buttons on the screen by swiping right until you hear the number you want, then select it by double-tapping the screen. When you have entered a digit, you hear the current sum. To continue, swipe right until you hear "Continue," and then double-tap the screen.

      5. You hear "You are requesting," followed by the amount requested and the name of the user.

        To add an optional note with your request, swipe right until you hear "Enter optional note for request," double-tap the screen and then enter your note using the on-screen keyboard.

        To send the request, swipe right until you hear "Request money," and then double-tap the screen.

        The request for funds is shown in the chat window as a card, which contains the current status of the request. To close the Money view, swipe left until you hear "Close view," and then double-tap the screen.

Note: Sending or requesting funds is only available to customers in certain countries.

Use the Chat gallery

The Chat gallery contains photos, files, and web links shared in a chat. You can use it to easily browse previously shared content.

  1. In a profile, swipe right until you hear "Open Chat gallery," and then double-tap the screen. The profile is closed and the Chat gallery opens.

  2. To browse the contents of the Chat gallery, swipe right until you hear the currently selected tab. Swipe left or right until you hear a tab you want, then double-tap the screen to select it.

Configure chat settings

You can access the settings from a chat profile. You can toggle notifications on and off, or delete an entire conversation. If you have opened a private chat, you can also toggle notifications for the private chat separately, delete the private chat, or end the private chat, which lets you continue chatting without end-to-end encryption.

  1. In a chat profile, swipe right until you hear "Chat settings," and double-tap the screen.

  2. Swipe right until you hear the setting you want, and then double-tap the screen to select it.

Delete or block a contact

  • To delete a contact:

    1. In a profile, swipe right until you hear "Delete contact," and then double-tap the screen. The Delete contact window opens.

    2. Swipe right until you hear "Delete," and then double-tap the screen to confirm the deletion.

  • To block a contact:

    1. In a user profile, swipe right until you hear "Block contact," and then double-tap the screen.

    2. Swipe right until you hear: "Report abuse from this person." If you want to report abuse, double-tap the screen to toggle the option. To select a reason for your report, swipe right until you hear the option you want and press double-tap the screen.

    3. Swipe right until you hear "Block," and then double-tap the screen.
