The OneNote for Windows 10 app will typically keep itself up to date. However, if you or your administrator have changed the default update settings at any time, or you want to manually update the app in anticipation of newly released features, you can follow the steps in this article to make sure OneNote is up to date.

Check your version of OneNote

To see which version of OneNote for Windows 10 you currently have installed, do the following:

  1. Start the OneNote app on your Windows 10 computer or device.

Note: The OneNote app is pre-installed from the Microsoft Store on all computers running any edition of Windows 10 (Home, Pro, or Enterprise). If you also have a recent version of Microsoft Office, you may have multiple versions of OneNote. To make sure you’re running the newest OneNote app discussed in this article, click the Start button in Windows 10, type OneNote, and then click the app that’s simply called OneNote in the search results list. For more information about multiple versions of OneNote on the same computer or device, see What’s the difference between OneNote and OneNote 2016?

  2. In OneNote, click the Settings and More button Settings And More Button located in the upper right corner of the app window, and then click Settings.

  3. In the Settings pane that opens, click About.

  4. On the About screen, note the version number.

Manually update OneNote

To check if any updates are available for OneNote for Windows 10, do the following:

  1. In Windows 10, click the Start button, type Store, and then click Microsoft Store in the search results list.

  2. In the Microsoft Store app, click the See more button ( ) located in the upper right corner of the window, and then click Downloads and updates.

  3. In the Downloads and updates window, click Get updates in the upper right corner.

Windows will proceed to install any pending updates that are available for OneNote.

Note: To check if Windows 10 app updates are automatically installed, open the Microsoft Store app, click the See more button ( ), and then click Settings. On the Settings screen, under App updates, make sure that the Update apps automatically option is set to On.

Learn more about new features recently added to OneNote

To catch up on new features recently released for OneNote for Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Open What’s new in OneNote for Windows 10 in your browser.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Click Everyone near the top of the article to see new features that are now available to everyone.

    • Click Office Insiders near the top of the article to see new features currently available only to Office Insiders.

Note: To view information about previously added features that you may have missed, scroll down to the Previous releases heading, and then click to expand any of the available release notes.

Not seeing a new feature you’re expecting?

If you’ve made sure that OneNote for Windows 10 is up to date and you’re still not seeing a particular new feature that you were expecting, consider the following:

  • Make sure that the expected new feature is not currently limited to our Office Insiders customers. To verify this, open What’s new in OneNote for Windows 10 in your browser, and then click the Office Insiders tab near the top of the article. If the new feature is listed there, you must be an Office Insider to see it.

  • While the majority of features in OneNote are free to use for everyone, a small number of premium features with more advanced functionality (for example, converting and solving math equations) require OneNote to be used as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription. If you already have a subscription, be sure to sign in to OneNote using the same Microsoft or organizational account that you’re using for your subscription. You may need to restart OneNote after sign-in to enable subscription features.

  • On rare occasions, new features may be rolled out gradually to OneNote customers, which means that not everyone will see an announced feature on the same day. This helps to ensure stability on our platform. If you’re among those customers who don’t see a new feature right away and you’ve checked everything else outlined in this article, please try manually updating OneNote again in a day or two. If you’re still having trouble after a few days, contact the OneNote product team. To do so, click the Settings and More button Settings And More Button in the upper right corner of the OneNote app window, click Settings, and then click Feedback.
