Office files may not save if Files On-Demand is enabled

Last Updated: November 7, 2017

When a large Office file is opened and saved on a PC with the OneDriveFiles On-Demand feature enabled, the save may fail without displaying an error.

We are aware of this issue and working on a fix. In the meantime, we recommend taking extra care to ensure that Office files larger than 5 MB are saved successfully in OneDrive. You can verify a file saved successfully by viewing the Date Modified time next to the file in File Explorer. Also, starting with Office Monthly Version 1707 (8431.2109), an error message will appear if the file fails to save. If the Office file fails to save, you can try the following workarounds:

Workaround #1

You may Save a Copy to a location outside the OneDrive folder and continue working.

Workaround #2

Open Settings in OneDrive and uncheck Save space and download files as you use them to disable the Files On-Demand feature.
