With the new Microsoft Office mobile apps, you can now access, edit, and save directly to your Dropbox account. You can even open and edit Office files that you already saved in Dropbox.

Dropbox and Office mobile apps can now:

  • Access your Dropbox files from Office apps on phones and tablets.

  • Open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly from the Dropbox mobile app and automatically save changes to Dropbox.

  • Share Dropbox files from the Office apps by using simple sharing feature.

Which Office apps does Dropbox work with?

Across Office apps on phones, tablets and the web, we support Dropbox in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Why is OneNote not included?

Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations are among the most popular file types in the world, so we prioritized Dropbox integration on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Does Microsoft also plan to add the ability to add Dropbox integration into the Office desktop apps?

Dropbox already offers a sync client for Windows desktop that lets you work on files in Dropbox with the Office desktop applications.

What plans are available in Dropbox?

For Dropbox plans, please see Dropbox plans. To download or take a tour, please see Download Dropbox.

What about Dropbox Business? Can I still connect Office apps with the Dropbox service?

Dropbox Business accounts can be added as a place from within the Office phone and tablet apps, letting you browse and view documents on a Dropbox Business account. To edit files stored in Dropbox Business, you'll need to have a license for Microsoft 365 for business that includes Office client licensing. Licenses that include the client are the following:

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for business

  • Microsoft 365 Business Standard

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise

  • Microsoft 365 E3

  • Microsoft 365 E4

  • Microsoft 365 E5

To add a place when you're in any of the new apps

  1. Tap the arrow in the top left, then tap Open.

  2. Tap Add a Place.

  3. Select Dropbox.

What is the experience for a Dropbox Business customer if they don’t have a qualifying Microsoft 365 for Business plan?

You can still add Dropbox as a place, and you will be able to browse and view Office files on Dropbox Business. However, you won't be able to edit those files.

To add a place when you're in any of the new apps

  1. Tap the arrow in the top left, then tap Open.

  2. Tap Add a Place.

  3. Select Dropbox.

Can I have both a consumer Dropbox account and a Dropbox Business account?

Yes. Dropbox Business users can access both personal and business files on any computer or mobile device, as well as on the web. This means that you can easily keep your business and personal files separate and still accessible from anywhere, and your business can fully control the contents of the Dropbox Business account.

What is the security around Dropbox Business and my Dropbox consumer account?

At Dropbox, the security of your data is their highest priority. Dropbox safeguards your information by using 256-bit AES encryption and transfers your files in a secure connection using SSL/TLS. You can securely access files and folders any time from our desktop, web, and mobile apps, or through third-party apps connected to your account. Additionally, Dropbox completed SOC 1, 2, and 3 audits, receiving ISO 27001 certification, and other security and compliance certifications.

Can I turn off the Dropbox integration in the Office apps for iPad, iPhone, and Android Phone? I don’t want my end users saving files to an unmanaged service.

The Dropbox support in the Office apps themselves isn't configurable. But Office apps on phone and tablets is manageable by Microsoft Intune to prevent copy, cut, paste, and save-as abilities, which helps to prevent corporate data from being saved or copied to unauthorized apps or services.
