Install or reinstall OneNote 2016 for Windows

Issue

OneNote 2016 can no longer be found on a PC where it had been previously installed as part of any edition of Microsoft Office.

When searching for OneNote 2016 on the Windows Start menu or in the Uninstall or change a program list in Windows Control Panel, OneNote 2016 appears to have been removed without the user’s knowledge or permission.

Background

This is a known issue that affects users on Microsoft Office releases prior to version 16.0.10730.20102, where an Office update may have caused OneNote 2016 to be automatically uninstalled for those users.

Users of Microsoft 365 Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) releases are not affected by this issue.

Note: Starting in March 2020, when you install Microsoft 365 or Office 2019, the OneNote desktop app will be installed alongside the Word, PowerPoint, and Excel desktop apps.

Resolution

  1. Click here to download OneNote 2016.

  2. Double-click the downloaded file to begin Setup.

The installer will automatically detect if you’re currently running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office and match your OneNote installation to the correct version.

Note: If you use Office at your work or school and your software is controlled by an IT administrator, you’ll need to ask them to deploy OneNote for you.

After you’ve finished installing OneNote 2016, it should be automatically associated (or re-associated) with your currently activated Microsoft Office license.

Note: If you installed OneNote 2016 before you install and activate Microsoft 365 or Office 2019, then the license that appears in OneNote 2016 will display as “Home and Student.” Once you’ve activated your edition of Office and then restart OneNote 2016, the license associated with Office will be added to OneNote 2016 as a second license, even though the default license will still display as “Home and Student.” As long as your edition of Office is properly activated, OneNote 2016 will have all of the capabilities that require an Office license.
