How do I upgrade Office?

If you’re looking to upgrade Office and get the latest version, you have different options depending on the version of Office you already have. See the sections below for what corresponds to your license of Office:

Office as a one-time purchase (2016, 2013, or older)

Office 365 for home subscriptions

Office 365 for business subscriptions

Note: Not sure what version of Office you have? See What version of Office am I using?

Office as a one-time purchase (2016, 2013, or older)

If you have a one-time purchase of Office, you don’t receive an automatic upgrade. Purchasing Office 365 is your best option. You’ll always have the latest features, security updates, and bug fixes, and you also get extra OneDrive storage as well as Office’s cloud connected features to help you maximize productivity. You can choose between Office 365 Personal (for one person) or Office 365 Home (for up to six people).

Another option is to purchase Office 2019 as one-time license. This can only be installed on one device and while you’ll get security updates and fixes, you won’t receive any new features.

Office 365 for home subscriptions

If you have an Office 365 for home subscription, you already have the most current version of Office at no additional cost. See What’s new in Office 365 to see what the newest features are. If you don’t see some of these features, you may not have received the latest update yet. You can also try Installing Office updates for PC or for Mac, Check for Office for Mac updates automatically.

Are you looking to switch to a different Office 365 Home subscription? For example, from Office 365 Personal to Office 365 Home? See Switch to a different Office 365 Home subscription.

Office 365 for business subscriptions

If you have an Office 365 work or school account, you’ll always have the latest version as long as you keep Office up-to-date. For PC, see Install Office updates or for Mac, Check for Office for Mac updates automatically. If you don’t see new features, you may not have received the update yet or your Office 365 admin might restrict which Office updates you get until they have a chance to test those features with other programs used by your organization. See When do I get the newest features in Office 365 to learn more about how Office updates are rolled out.
