The Microsoft® Lync® 2013 for Android app brings Lync presence, instant messaging (IM), and voice and video to your mobile device. With Lync 2013 for Android, you’ve got several ways to communicate, including IM, calling, or a video call using either Wi-Fi only or your cellular data connection when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

Installation requirements

You’ll need an Android 4.0 or a later phone- or tablet-oriented operating system to install Lync 2013 for Android. The app will run on Android mobile devices, including tablets, except those with the Tegra2 chip.

Install Lync app

Install the Lync app on your mobile device with a couple of steps.

  1. From your phone or tablet, go to the Google Play Store app, and search for Microsoft Lync 2013 for Android.

  2. Tap the Install button. As soon as the app is installed, it appears on your device.

Remove Lync app

To remove the Lync app, do this:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings, and then tap Application manager.

  2. Tap Lync 2013. On the Lync 2013 screen, tap Uninstall.

  3. As soon as the app disappears, it’s removed from your device.

Sign in to Lync app

If you have a cellular data plan, or your mobile device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, signing in is quick. Just start the Lync app, and on the sign-in screen, enter your credentials, and tap Sign In.

To sign in, use your sign-in address (name@domain.com) and password. In some cases a user name should be provided in the Advanced Options. If you haven’t used Lync on your desktop computer and this is the first time you’re using Lync, you need to have a Lync account created and a sign-in address. If you don’t know this information, contact your technical support team. You can’t create a new Lync account from the Lync 2013 for Android app.

Sign out of Lync app

To sign out of Lync, tap the My Info icon, first icon from the left. Then under your name, tap your current status and on the Set my status screen, tap Sign Out. You can also tap the Menu button on your device, and then tap Sign out.

Use Lync app for the first time

The first time you sign in, you’ll need to decide whether you want to make Lync audio and video calls by using Wi-Fi only, or by using your cellular data connection when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

  1. When you first sign in, tap Next.

  2. On the MANAGE DATA USE screen, next to Require Wi-Fi for VoIP calls:

  3. Tap ON to use Wi-Fi or the mobile voice network to make Lync calls.

  4. Tap OFF to use Wi-Fi to make Lync calls. When you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, you can use your cellular data connection or mobile minutes instead.

  5. Next to Require Wi-Fi for video calls:

  6. Tap ON to use only Wi-Fi to make Lync video calls.

  7. Tap OFF to use your cellular data connection to make Lync video calls when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

  8. Next to Require Wi-Fi for Content:

  9. Tap ON to use only Wi-Fi to receive meeting content.

  10. Tap OFF to use your cellular data connection to receive meeting content when you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network.

    Important:  The selections you make here may affect your data use charges. To learn more about the data use options, go to Manage Wi-Fi for VoIP options.

  11. When you’ve made your selections, tap Next.

  12. Enter your Android’s mobile number with country/region codes. When Lync cannot use the Wi-Fi or cellular data connection to make an audio or video call, you’ll be called back at this number to connect you to the audio portion of the Lync call.

  13. When you’ve finished entering your number, tap Next.

  14. Next, the Change Call Forwarding Setting screen is shown, confirm your call forwarding settings by tapping Yes or No.

  15. Tap Next to sync your Lync contacts on your device phonebook. If you don’t want to sync your Lync contact, uncheck the Sync contacts box.

  16. Tap Done to start using Lync.
