Error when opening Microsoft Office apps

ISSUE

When you start an Office app, such as Word or Excel, your app may close unexpectedly or you may see this error message:

"We're sorry, but Office App has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Office App will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?"

This issue occurs with applications that depend on Windows Task Scheduler. The issue is intermittent, and occurs only on computers that are protected by the 1.1.15700.X version of Microsoft Malware Protection Engine. The following products use this engine:

  • Windows Defender Antivirus

  • Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection

  • Microsoft Forefront 2007 Endpoint Protection

  • Microsoft Security Essentials

STATUS: FIXED

To resolve this issue, update the threat definition files to version 1.1.287.94.0 or higher. For information about how to check and update these files, go to Definition updates for Windows Defender Antivirus and other Microsoft antimalware and then restart your PC after installing these updates.
