Delete contacts or restore contacts in Outlook.com

Go to the People page in Outlook.com to delete or restore contacts or contact lists.

The instructions are slightly different depending on whether or not you're using the Outlook.com beta. Choose which version of Outlook.com you're using to see the instructions that apply to you.

Delete one or more contacts

  1. In Outlook.com, select People at the lower left corner of the page.

  2. Select one or more contacts in the middle pane, and then select Delete.

    Select a contact and then select Delete

  3. Select Delete to confirm.

Delete one or more contact lists

  1. In Outlook.com, select People at the lower left corner of the page.

  2. In the left pane, select Contact lists.

  3. Select one or more contact lists in the middle pane, and then select Delete.

  4. Select Delete to confirm.

Restore a contact or contact list

Note: You can restore contacts or contact lists you previously deleted. They're restored to the folder they were in when you deleted them.

  1. In Outlook.com, select People at the lower left corner of the page.

  2. On the toolbar, select Manage > Restore deleted contacts.

  3. In the Restore deleted contacts window, select the box next to each contact you want to restore.

  4. Select Restore.

Note: If you don't see the Restore deleted contacts on the Manage menu, restoring is not yet available in the Beta version. You can then return to the classic version of Outlook to restore your contacts. To go to the classic version, select the Outlook beta toggle at the top right corner of the screen and turn it off. When you're done, select the beta toggle again and turn it on.

Delete a contact or contact list

Note: When you delete a contact, it appears in the Deleted Items folder as a message, with "[Unknown]" listed as the sender.

  1. In Outlook.com, select People at the bottom of the page.

  2. Select the contact or contact list you want to delete, and select Delete.

    Note: If you don't see Delete, the contact might be from Skype or a connected social network account. Skype contacts must be deleted from Skype. Contacts from connected social network accounts must be deleted from that account.

  3. Select Delete to confirm.

Restore a contact or contact list

Note: You can recover contacts or contact lists you deleted less than 30 days ago. When you recover a contact or contact list, Outlook.com automatically places it in the Your Contacts folder.

  1. In Outlook.com, select People at the bottom of the page.

  2. At the top of the page, select Manage > Restore deleted contacts.

  3. In the Recover deleted items window, check the box next to each contact you want to restore.

  4. At the top of the window, select Recover, and select OK.
