There are several places Outlook uses to store contacts. Your personal contacts are stored in folders either in an Outlook Data file or in your Exchange or Microsoft 365 mailbox. Organizational contacts are stored in a Global Address List. You can add, edit, or delete contacts stored in your personal contacts folders. You can't add, edit, or delete contacts stored in the Global Address List. Contact your administrator for assistance with Global Address List contacts.

Important: Steps may be different between new and classic Outlook for Windows. To determine which version of Outlook you're using, look for File on the ribbon. If there's no File option, follow the steps under the New Outlook tab. If the File option appears, select the tab for Classic Outlook.

To delete a contact:

  1. Select People button icon People on the left of the window.

  2. Select the contact that you want to delete, then click Delete on the Ribbon or right-click the contact and select Delete.

To delete a contact from one of your contacts folders:

  1. On the navigation bar, click People.

    Click People

  2. Select the contact you want to delete and then click Delete on the Ribbon or right-click the contact and then click Delete.
