Create, edit, delete and restore tasks

Create a task

You can create a to-do from the + Add a task input field in any of your lists. Just select the field, type the task's title and then press Return or Enter on your keyboard. Your new task will then be added to the bottom of your list.

Edit a task

To rename a task just select the task to open detail view. Once in detail view you can click or tap the task's title. A cursor should then appear in the task title field and you will be able to rename or edit the task's title.

Delete a task

To delete a task you can select the trash can icon in the bottom right corner of the task’s detail view. Alternatively, if you’ve enabled context menus in your Settings you can right-click and select Delete selected task on desktop. On Android and iOS you can also swipe from right to left to delete.

Delete multiple tasks

Right now, the easiest way to bulk delete tasks is from desktop on our web, Windows or Mac app.

If you're on Windows, you'll need to first make sure that context menus are enabled in your Settings.

Then, just shift-click to select the desired tasks.

Once selected, right-click to access the context menu and simply click Delete tasks.

In the Movies to watch list two completed tasks are selected. The context menu is open with the option to Delete tasks selected

Get notified before deleting a task

To make sure that none of your to-dos or lists are deleted by accident, our mobile apps automatically ask for confirmation before deleting any to-dos or lists. You can also turn this feature on or off in your desktop or web app. To turn it on, just click your username / profile pic and then check the box next to Confirm before deleting.

Restore a deleted task

Since your tasks are stored on Exchange Online and are also visible in Outlook Tasks, you can recover accidentally deleted tasks in Outlook:

  1. Log in to Outlook on desktop with the same Microsoft Account that you use with Microsoft To Do.

  2. Navigate to your email folder list, and then click Deleted Items.

  3. Locate the deleted task, right-click it, and then click Move > Other Folder > Tasks.

It should then automatically re-appear in its correct list.
