Copy and paste a formula to another cell or worksheet

When you copy formulas to another location, you can choose formula-specific paste options in the destination cell(s).

Here’s how you copy and paste a formula:

  1. Select the cell containing the formula you want to copy.

  2. Click Home > Copy, or press Ctrl+C.

  3. On the same sheet or another sheet, click onto the cell into which you'll paste the formula.

  4. To paste the formula with its formatting, click Home > Paste or press Ctrl+V.

    For other formula paste options, click the arrow below Paste and choose either:

    • Formulas Button image to paste only the formula.

    • Values Button image to paste the value only (result of the formula).
       

Verify and fix cell references in the new location

After copying a formula to a new location, it's important to verify that all cell references are correct. The cell references may have changed based on the absolute or relative reference type you used.

For example, if you copy a formula two cells down and to the right of cell A1, the cells references will update according to following:

This reference:

Changes to:

$A$1 (absolute column and absolute row)

$A$1

A$1 (relative column and absolute row)

C$1

$A1 (absolute column and relative row)

$A3

A1 (relative column and relative row)

C3


If cell references in the formula don’t give you the result you want, try switching to different reference types:

  1. Select the cell containing a formula.

  2. In the formula bar Button image , select the reference you want to change.

  3. Press F4 to switch between the absolute and relative reference combinations, and choose the one you want.

Move a formula to another location

Unlike copying a formula, when you move a formula to another location in the same or another worksheet, the cell references in the formula won’t change—irrespective of the type of cell references you use.

Follow these steps to move a formula:

  1. Click the cell containing the formula you want to move.

  2. Click Home > Cut Button image , or press Ctrl+X.

  3. On the same sheet or another sheet, click the cell into which you'll paste the formula.

  4. To paste the formula with its formatting, click Home > Paste or press Ctrl+V.

    For other formula paste options, click the arrow below Paste and pick:

    • Formulas Button image to paste only just the formula.

    • Values Button image to paste the formula result only (result of the formula).

When you copy formulas to another location, you can pick formula-specific paste options in the destination cells. Here’s how you copy and paste a formula:

  1. Select the cell with the formula you want to copy.

  2. Click Home > Copy, or press Ctrl+C.

  3. Click the cell where you want to paste the formula.

    If that cell is on another worksheet, go to that worksheet and click the cell you want.

  4. To paste the formula with its formatting, click Home > Paste or press Ctrl+V.

    For other formula paste options, click the arrow below Paste and pick:

    • Paste Formulas to paste just the formula,

    • Paste Values to paste only the formula result.

  5. Verify the cell references are correct for the new location.
