Use the options on the Indents and Spacing tab to control text alignment, indentation, and line spacing for selected paragraphs.

General

Alignment     If you are using the default indentation settings, Microsoft Office Publisher aligns the selected paragraphs relative to the text box margins when you choose an alignment option. If you have chosen a different preset indentation or if you have set custom indents, Publisher aligns the selected paragraphs relative to the indents. To align text relative to the left and right margins, remove any indentation formatting before choosing an alignment option.

Indentation

Preset     You can select an option to apply one of Publisher's preset indents for common elements such as hanging indents and quotations.

First line     To specify a custom indent rather than using a preset indent, type or select the distance you want to indent the first line of the selected paragraph.

Left     To specify a custom indent rather than using a preset indent, type or select the distance you want to indent the left edge of the selected paragraph.

Right     To specify a custom indent rather than using a preset indent, type or select the distance you want to indent the right edge of the selected paragraph.

Tip

The default measurement units for indents are displayed in inches. You can specify other measurement units by typing the abbreviation for them after the numerical value: inches (in), centimeters (cm), picas (pi), points (pt), or pixels (px). When you specify a unit other than inches, Publisher converts the measurement to its equivalent in inches.

Line spacing

Before paragraphs     Type or select the amount of space you want above each selected paragraph.

After paragraphs     Type or select the amount of space you want below each selected paragraph.

Tip

The default measurement units for space before or after paragraphs are displayed in points. You can specify other measurement units by typing the abbreviation for them after the numerical value: inches (in), centimeters (cm), picas (pi), points (pt), or pixels (px). When you specify a unit other than points, Microsoft Publisher converts the measurement to its equivalent in points.

Between lines     Type or select the amount of space you want between lines of text in the selected paragraph. Publisher automatically adds one space (sp) between lines of text. The size of a space depends on the size of the font.

Tip

The default measurement units for space between lines are displayed in spaces (sp). If you type a whole number, Microsoft Publisher interprets it as a number of spaces. You can specify other measurement units by typing the abbreviation for them after the numerical value: inches (in), centimeters (cm), picas (pi), points (pt), or pixels (px). When you specify a unit other than spaces, Publisher converts the measurement to its equivalent in points.

Align text to baseline guides     If you have multiple columns or text boxes on a page and you have set baseline guides (by clicking Layout Guides on the Arrange menu), you can select the Align text to baseline guides check box to precisely align text across multiple columns or text boxes.

Note: If the line spacing of your text is greater than the baseline guide spacing, text that is aligned to the baseline guides will skip a line between lines of text. You can avoid this by setting the line spacing of your body text in points with an exact value that is the same or less than your baseline guide spacing.
