Now that you have learned the different types of administrator available within Office 365, we can now explore how to assign user administrative roles. Once Office 365 has been purchased, and the initial setup is completed, you will be able to use the global administrator to create additional users. Once users have been created, you can assign any of the available administrator roles to your new users. It is best practice to ensure that you create other administrators to help share the workload and also to allow redundancy within the organization, especially during vacation periods or absence or in case an administrator leaves the organization.

The high-level steps required for assigning an administrator role in Office 365 are first, you need to sign in to your Office 365 admin center as a global administrator. Then, click Users and then Active Users. Select the user that you want to make an administrator and then next to Roles, choose Edit. Choose Customized administrator and then select which of the administrator roles that you want this user to have. As an administrator, you should also provide an alternate email address that is not linked to your Office 365, which can be used in case the user cannot access Office 365, or their password needs to be reset.

And then click Save. Let's drop onto our demo PC and take a look at how to assign administrative roles within Office 365. First, we'll open up our browser and navigate to We sign in with an administrative account and then click the Admin tile. On the Office 365 Admin center home screen, we click Users and then Active Users. I want to select Alice and make her an administrator.

I select her. On the Properties page for Alice's account, next to Roles, we can click the Edit option. We can see that her user account has currently no administrator access configured. We can now select either Global administrator or the Customized administrator. If we select the Customized administrator, we can then choose one of the other administrative roles we've already talked about. I'm going to make her a User management administrator and select this option.

I will then provide an alternate email address in case she cannot log on to Office 365, and then click Save. The role has been applied and we can click Close. We can see on Alice's property page that the role has now been updated, and she is now a user management administrator.
