Apply a template to an existing presentation

If you've begun a presentation but now need to apply a different template to it, use the following procedure.

  1. Copy the new template file to the following folder on your computer:

    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes

    UserName isn't the literal name of the folder. It represents your user name.

  2. With your existing presentation open in PowerPoint, click the Design tab on the ribbon.

  3. In the Themes group, click the More button (illustrated below) to open the entire gallery of themes:

  4. Under the Custom section of the gallery, select your template.

    On the Design tab, custom templates are available to choose in the Custom section of the Theme gallery

    The template is applied to the open presentation.

    /Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/My Themes

  2. With your existing presentation open in PowerPoint, click the Design tab on the ribbon (version 2016) or click the Themes tab on the ribbon (version 2011).

  3. In the Themes group, click the downward pointing arrow (highlighted in the illustration below) to open the entire gallery of themes:

  4. Under the Custom section of the gallery (highlighted in the illustration below), select your template.

    Look for your template in the Custom section of the gallery

    The template is applied to the open presentation.
