What is Lync Web App?

Lync Web App for Lync 2013 is a browser-based meeting client that you use to join Lync Meetings. You can’t schedule a meeting from Lync Web App, but can only join a Lync Meeting that was scheduled using either Microsoft Outlook or Lync Web Scheduler. You don’t need to download and install Lync Web App before a Lync Meeting. Instead, when you click the Join Lync Meeting link in a meeting invitation, Lync Web App will open automatically if:

  • the computer you’re using for a Lync Meeting doesn’t have Lync installed

  • you’re using a Macintosh computer

Lync Web App for Lync 2013 makes joining a Lync Meeting quick and simple. When you click the URL for a Lync Meeting from the meeting invitation, the Lync Web App window opens. Enter your name in the text box and select Join the meeting. That’s it! See Join a Lync Meeting from Lync Web App to learn about the different ways in which you can join a meeting.

Depending on how the meeting organizer has set up the meeting, you’ll either enter the meeting right away, or wait in the meeting lobby until the organizer or a presenter admits you.

After you enter the meeting, you’ll be able to use all the convenient features of the Lync Web App meeting room.

Lync Web App replaces Lync 2010 Attendee

Lync Web App for Lync 2013 supports computer audio and video, and replaces the Lync 2010 Attendee meeting client. Lync Attendee is not supported for Lync 2013, and unlike Attendee, you don’t need to download Lync Web App.

Comparison with other Lync clients

Lync Web App is intended to provide only a rich meeting experience. It doesn’t offer any other Lync features, such as instant messaging, presence, and contact information. Here’s an overview of the feature differences between Lync Web App and other Lync clients.

  • Lync Online provides Lync functionality—meetings, IM, presence and contact information, phone and video calls, and so on—to users who subscribe to Office 365, a cloud-based service that gives you secure anywhere-access to Office applications, including Lync.

  • Requires a Lync account
