What does it mean when your OneDrive account is frozen?

Your OneDrive account will be frozen if you don’t use your account for over a year, or if you exceed your OneDrive storage limit for an extended time.

To make sure your OneDrive doesn’t become frozen, use OneDrive at least once a year and stay within your storage limit. You might exceed your storage limit for any or all the following reasons:

What happens when my OneDrive is frozen?

Don’t worry, your files are still there. You just need to unfreeze your account to get access to your files again. Keep in mind, though, that you will need to unfreeze your account, or your files will eventually be deleted.

How do I unfreeze my account?

If your OneDrive is frozen because you stopped using it, sign in to the OneDrive website and follow the on-screen instructions to unfreeze it.

If you’re over your storage limit, you have two options to bring your account back into good standing:

  • Choose Get 1 TB (1000 GB) of OneDrive storage with Office 365 and buy an Office 365 subscription. Read about pricing of OneDrive storage plans by country/region.

  • Choose Unfreeze your account to temporarily access your files. You'll have 30 days to remove enough files to be within your storage limit. Your files will be read-only, but you can download or delete files to get back under your storage limit. If you don't remove enough files within 30 days, your account will be frozen once more and you won't be able to unfreeze it again. If your account is frozen again, and you have questions, sign in to the OneDrive website. At the top of the page, select ? > Email OneDrive support. (On a mobile device, at the top of the page, select ... > ? > Email OneDrive support.)

How long does it take to unfreeze my OneDrive account?

If your account isn't restored after 24 hours, you can email the OneDrive support team.

How can I make sure stay within the storage limit?

Check and compare the size of your OneDrive storage to the available disk space on your PC. If you don't have enough space on your OneDrive or your PC, you will have to move or delete some files, or reduce the number of files and folders.
