What are the most important profile settings?

The information in your profile allows other people to find you when they're looking for someone with your background and expertise. Thus, the more thoroughly you fill out your profile and keep it up-to-date, the more others in your organization may be able to find you when they search for particular topics.

Some profile properties have different search rankings. For example, the keywords you enter in your Ask Me About field are ranked higher than the keywords you enter in your Interests or Schools field. As a general rule, it's a good idea to add a profile picture, and at minimum, keywords in the Ask Me About field.

The following table lists the Search-sensitive profile properties that may appear in your profile, as well as which profile details are usually editable or pre-populated. The table also shows the relative search ranking for these profile fields.

Why can't I edit some profile settings?

Administrators determine which profile properties appear in your profile when they build the personal profile sites for your organization. Typically, administrators pre-populate certain profile details—such as your user name—with static information from a central database. You can't edit these details because they're essential for many other functions.

How do I keep certain profile details private?

Your profile contains information about you that people in your organization see when they visit your profile page. Some of this information is fixed by your organization and always shared with everyone, such as your name, title, department and manage.

Many fields, however, provide a menu in which you can choose to keep the information private by selecting Only Me Under Who can see this?

What are the guidelines for adding a profile picture?

You can upload a photo in one of these image formats: .bmp, .jpeg, or .png. An optimal picture size is 96 x 96 pixels.

How do I change my language and region settings?

To edit these settings in your profile, select the ellipsis ..., and then select Language and Region.

Note the following details about updating language and region settings:

  • The language options on this page are supported only in SharePoint Server 2013. For information on changing language settings in Office 365, see Change your display language.

  • To see options for updating your time zone, first select Always use my personal settings in the Region section in order to make the time zone fields editable.

Applies To: SharePoint Server 2013 Preview, SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise, SharePoint Online
