Use keyboard shortcuts to add features to the Quick Access Toolbar

Using keyboard shortcuts is another way to move around in PowerPoint without using a mouse. But you can also add buttons to the Quick Access Toolbar that represent your favorite features and then access them by pressing ALT, and the coordinating number key.

What is the Quick Access Toolbar and what are Key Tips?

The Quick Access Toolbar is located in the upper left corner of the PowerPoint or other Office app window, just above the File tab.

When you press Alt, PowerPoint displays Key Tips, which are numbered or lettered labels that represent a tab or a feature. Key Tips associated with the Quick Access Toolbar are numbered labels, while other features in PowerPoint are represented by lettered labels.

Add features to the Quick Access Toolbar

To add a feature to the Quick Access Toolbar:

  1. Press Alt.

  2. When the lettered Key Tips appear, press F to open the File tab.

  3. Press T to open the Options tab.

  4. In the PowerPoint Options box, use the down arrow to move down to the Quick Access Toolbar tab.

  5. Press Tab to move into the Customize Quick Access Toolbar box.

  1. Press C to open the drop-down feature list (under Choose commands from).

  2. Use the down arrow to scroll to the tab that contains the feature you want to add.


TIP The tabs are listed in the order as they appear on the ribbon.

  1. Press Enter to select a tab.

  2. Press Tab to move to the list of features on the tab you just selected.

  3. Use the down arrow to scroll through the features in the list.

  4. When you find the feature you want to add to the Quick Access Toolbar, press Alt + A.

  5. Use the down arrow to continue to scroll through the other features you want to add.

Use the features you added to the Quick Access Toolbar

To access a feature you added to the Quick Access Toolbar, press Alt and then press the Key Tip number associated with the button.
