Use a screen reader to name a cell or data range in Excel 2016

By naming cells and data ranges, you can make your formulas much easier to understand in Excel 2016 (for example, cells that contain a pay rate could be named, “PayRate”). You can define a name for a cell range, function, constant, or table. Screen readers will announce the name of the cell or data range which makes the information easier to understand

Note: This topic assumes that JAWS users have turned off the Virtual Ribbon Menu feature.

Name a cell or data range

  1. Select the cell or range of cells that you want to name.

  2. Press Alt+M and then press M. Press Enter until you hear “Name colon edit.” The focus moves to the Name: box.

  3. Type the cell or data range name.

  4. Tab to the OK button and then press Enter. The focus returns to the spreadsheet.
