Use a screen reader to edit information about a file or folder in a document library in SharePoint Online

A document library in SharePoint Online is a great tool for sharing documents within your team or organization. You can use keyboard shortcuts and a screen reader to edit information (such as its content type, name, or title) about a file or folder in a document library in SharePoint Online.

Notes

Use a screen reader to edit information about a file or folder in a document library in SharePoint Online
  1. Sign in to your organization’s Office 365 account, start the SharePoint app, and then open your document library.

Tip: Document libraries in SharePoint Online have two different views: classic and modern. For most people, modern is the default. However, if you hear “Check it out button” when navigating your document library, you’re using the classic view. To view modern document libraries, when you hear “Check it out button,” press Enter. After the view of your document library changes to the modern view and the focus moves from the Check it out button to the New link, you hear the name of your document library, followed by “New.”

  2. To view modern document libraries in SharePoint Online, press the Tab key until you hear “Check it out button.” Press Enter. After the view of your document library changes to the modern view and the focus moves from the Check it out button to the New link, you hear the name of your document library, followed by “New.”

Tip: If you don’t hear “Check it out button,” you’re already using the modern view.

  3. To move the focus to the list of items in your document library, press the Tab key until:

    • In JAWS, you hear “All documents, Grid column headers.”

    • In Narrator, you hear “Table, Name,” followed by the rest of the names of the columns you’re currently using.

  4. To move the focus to the file or folder you want to edit, press the Down Arrow key until you hear the name of the file or folder.

  5. To open the shortcut menu for the file or folder, press Shift + F10:

    • In JAWS, you hear “Context menu.”

    • In Narrator, you hear “Open,” followed by the names of the rest of the commands on the shortcut menu.

  6. To move the focus to the Details command on the menu, press the Down Arrow key until you hear “Details.”

  7. To open the Details pane, press Enter. The focus moves to the Content Type property (for the selected file or folder) in the Properties area of the Details pane. You hear “Content Type.” Do any of the following for the selected file or folder:

    • To choose a content type, press Spacebar. To move between content types (as you hear the names of each type), use the Up Arrow key and the Down Arrow key. To select a specific content type, press Enter.

    • To enter a name, press the Tab key until you hear “Name.” Press Enter. Type the name. To save the new name, press Enter.

    • To enter a title, press the Tab key until you hear “Title.” Press Enter. Type the title. To save the new title, press Enter.

Tip: The Details pane stays open until you close it, so you can easily navigate to the properties for an item without having to open the Details pane for every item.
