Browsing options

Several improvements to the mobile browser experience include a new contemporary view. Depending on the mobile browser, users have one of the following browsing options:

Contemporary view    This view offers an optimized mobile browser experience to users and renders in HTML5. This view is available to Mobile Internet Explorer version 9.0 or later, Windows Phone, and Safari version 4.0 or later.

Classic view    This view renders in HTML format, or similar markup languages (CHTML, WML, and so on), and provides backward compatibility for mobile browsers that cannot render in the new contemporary view. The classic experience is identical to the mobile browser experience of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.

Full screen UI    You can also use a full desktop view of a site on a smartphone device. If you’re in mobile view, tap Settings Office 365 Settings button and tap Switch to PC View. The view changes to the full desktop view. To go back to the mobile view, tap Settings Office 365 Settings button and tap Mobile view from the drop down list.

Mobile browser redirection

To access a site using the optimized mobile browser experience, a new feature named Mobile Browser Viewer must be activated on the site. If activated, this feature checks the device’s mobile browser to determine if it can handle HTML5. If the mobile browser supports HTML5 the contemporary view is shown. Otherwise, the classic view is shown.

By default, this feature is activated when any of the following site templates are used:

Collaboration templates    Team Site, Blank Site, Document Workspace, Blog, Group Work Site, Visio Process Repository

Meetings templates    Basic Meeting Workspace, Blank Meeting Workspace, Decision Meeting Workspace, Social Meeting Workspace, Multipage Meeting Workspace

Enterprise templates    Document Center, Records Center, Business Intelligence Center, My Site Host, Basic Search Center, FAST Search Center

All other site templates require you to explicitly activate the feature. You can activate or deactivate Mobile Browser Viewer in Site Settings under Site Actions and Manage Site Features.
