Use Skype for Business from within Yammer

You can now launch and perform some basic Skype for Business tasks right from your navigation bar in Yammer in Office 365. To see this experience, the user should have a Skype for Business license as part of their Office 365 subscription. 

Launch Skype for Business from the navigation bar

  1. On the navigation bar, click (or tap) the Skype for Business icon ( Skype for Business icon on the Office 365 navigation bar ).

  2. Choose the Skype for Business task that you want to do.

Search for people in your organization

  1. Click (or tap) the magnifying glass ( Search for contacts ).

  2. In the search box, type the name of who you want to contact.

  3. Select the person from the contacts list.

  4. To add the person to your contacts list, click Add To Contacts.

  1. Click (or tap) the address book icon ( View your contacts list ).

  2. Choose a contact from the list or search for someone else.

Start a conversation

  1. Click (or tap) the plus sign ( Start a conversation ).

  2. In the conversation window, type your message.

  3. To add other people to the conversion, click (or tap) the add people icon ( Add other people to the conversation ).

View your active conversations

  1. Look in the sidebar (below the task symbols) to see if you have active conversations. New messages in these conversations will show an orange badge.

  2. When someone initiates a new conversation with you, you'll be notified by a blue badge on the Skype for Business icon ( Skype for Business icon with notification badge ) on the Office 365 navigation bar.

1.   Hover over a user's name in Yammer to see a hover card with the profile information of the user.

2.   In the hover card, you will see the Skype for Business presence status of the user.

3.   Visit the profile page of a user by clicking on a user's name in Yammer. Here, you will see the Skype for Business presence status of the user.

Call user with Skype for Business Desktop client

1.   In the Yammer user hover card, you will see a 'Call with Skype' button. Clicking on this button launches Skype for Business desktop client and opens a chat with that person, facilitating a quick chat and call.

2.   Visit the profile page of a user by clicking on a user's name in Yammer. Here, you will see the 'Call with Skype' button.

View Skype for Business presence status in Yammer private messages

This feature is behind an A/B feature test, so not all users would see this experience. For more context, see the Yammer Service Description here

1.   In the left bottom corner of the global navigation in Yammer, you see a list of recent private messages. Skype for Business presence status will be added to the participant names in that list. Note that presence status will be shown as 'unknown' for any private message with 3 or more participants.

 2.   When you view a private message in Yammer, in the participants list, you will see the Skype for Business presence along with the name.

Frequently asked questions

What is the experience for a user who has on-premises Skype for Business (no Skype for Business online account)?

For a user without a Skype for Business license in their Office 365 account, the Skype for Business icon on the Office 365 navigation bar will not be visible. Also, none of the integrated experiences in Yammer will be visible. This requirement for Skype for Business online is the same as that for Outlook Web Access - more information here.

What is the Skype for Business integrated experience on Yammer mobile apps?
