Uninstall Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 365 from a PC

The following steps describe how to uninstall Office 2016 or 2013 products on a PC (laptop, desktop, or 2-in-1). For other versions of Office, including Office 2016 for Mac, or older versions of Office, see the section, Uninstall Office for Mac, Office 2010, or Office 2007 below.

Try uninstalling Office using the Control Panel first. If that doesn't work use the easy fix tool or try uninstalling Office manually.

Important: You can't uninstall an individual app such as Word or Publisher that's included as part of your Office Suite installation. The only way to uninstall an individual app is if you purchased it as a stand-alone version.

Option 1 - Uninstall Office using the Control Panel

Windows 10

  1. Right-click the Start button Windows Start button in Windows 8 and Windows 10 (lower-left corner), and choose Control Panel.

  2. Select Programs and Features, then right-click your Microsoft Office product, and choose Uninstall.

    Note: If you bought a suite like Microsoft Office 365 Home or Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013, search for the suite name. If you bought an individual Office application like Microsoft Word, search for the application name.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Windows 8.1 or 8

  1. Right-click the Start button Windows Start button in Windows 8 and Windows 10 (lower-left corner), and choose Control Panel.

  2. Select Programs and Features, then right-click your Microsoft Office product, and choose Uninstall.

    Note: If you bought a suite like Microsoft Office 365 Home or Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013, search for the suite name. If you bought an individual Office application like Microsoft Word, search for the application name.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Windows 7 or Vista

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.

  2. Click Programs > Programs and Features.

  3. Right-click the Office application you want to remove, and then click Uninstall.

    Note: If you bought a suite like Microsoft Office 365 Home or Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013, search for the suite name. If you bought an individual Office application like Microsoft Word, search for the application name.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Option 2 - Completely uninstall Office with the easy fix tool

Internet Explorer

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. When prompted by the browser, choose Open.

    Note: If the file doesn’t open, choose Save > Open Folder, and then double-click the file (it should start with "O15CTRRemove") to run the easy fix tool.

  3. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  4. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

    Important: If you don't see this screen, you may be using a different browser. See the steps below if you're using Chrome or Firefox.

  5. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

Chrome

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. In the lower-lower left corner select the o15CTRRemove file and from the dropdown, select Show in folder.

    From the dropdown, select Show in folder
  3. Double-click the download, o15CTRRemove to run the easy fix tool.

  4. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  5. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

  6. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

Firefox

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. Select Save File, and then OK.

  3. In the upper-right browser window, select Show all downloads.

  4. In the Library, select Downloads > O15CTRRemove.digicab, and then select the folder icon.

  5. Double-click the O15CTRRemove.digicab.

  6. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  7. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

  8. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

Option 3 - Uninstall Office manually

If the easy fix tool doesn't completely uninstall Office from your PC, you can manually uninstall Office. Select the version you want to uninstall.

  • Individual 2016 or 2013 applications such as Word, Excel, or Project

  1. Go to http://www.office.com/myaccount.

    If prompted, sign in with the email address and password associated with your copy of Office.

  2. Select Install.

Office 365 for business subscriptions that include the desktop Office applications, such as:

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx.

    If prompted, sign in with the email address and password that you created or someone in your organization created on your behalf.

  2. Select Install.
