Turn off Scroll Lock

Typically, when a cell is selected in a spreadsheet and you press the arrow keys, the selection moves between individual cells, either up or down, or left or right, depending on the arrow key you press. However, if you press the arrow keys when Scroll Lock is on, you scroll one row up or one row down. Or, you scroll one column to the left or one column to the right.

Scroll Lock is a toggling lock key on the keyboard, just like the CAPS LOCK key. Once pressed, Scroll Lock is enabled. To use the arrow keys to move between cells, you must turn Scroll Lock off.

Troubleshooting Scroll Lock

You can tell if Scroll Lock is on, because Scroll Lock appears in the Excel status bar.

Scroll Lock displayed in the status bar

If you suspect that Scroll Lock is turned on, but Scroll Lock does not appear in the Excel status bar, it may be because the status bar has been customized to hide the Scroll Lock status. To determine if this is the case, right-click the Excel status bar. The check box to the left of the Scroll Lock option determines whether the Scroll Lock status will appear in the Excel status bar. If a check box is visible, Scroll Lock will appear in the Excel status bar if Scroll Lock has been turned on.

Customize menu for the status bar
The check box indicates that the Scroll Lock status will appear in the status bar.

If the Scroll Lock check box has not been selected, the Excel status bar will not display Scroll Lock when Scroll Lock has been turned on. The status of Scroll Lock appears to the right of the Scroll Lock option.

Customize menu for the status bar
The arrow indicates that Scroll Lock is currently turned on.

If the status is set to On, Scroll Lock is turned on. If the status is set to Off, Scroll Lock is not turned on.
