Try these solutions to fix your Office error

Try restarting your computer and installing Office again

  1. Restart your computer.

  2. Reinstall Office.

    For information about signing in to install or reinstall Office, see How to install Office. Complete the steps specific to your version.

    Note: If you’re having trouble signing in, check that you’re using the correct email and password. If you still can’t sign in you may be using a different Office 365 service and have a different sign in location. See Where to sign in to Office 365.

Note: Office needs to be installed on the same hard drive where Windows is installed. How much space does it need?

Uninstall and reinstall Office

Use the easy fix tool to completely remove Office from your computer. Then, reinstall Office. Select your browser from below for the steps to uninstall and reinstall Office.

Internet Explorer

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. At the bottom of the browser window, select Open to open the O15CTRRemove.diagcab file.

    Note: If the file doesn’t open, choose Save > Open Folder, and then double-click the file (it should start with "O15CTRRemove") to run the easy fix tool.

  3. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  4. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

    Important: If you don't see this screen, you may be using a different browser. See the steps below if you're using Chrome or Firefox.

  5. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

  6. After restarting, install Office again. Use the table below to find the correct sign in location for your version of Office.

    • Office 365 Home

    • Office 365 Personal

    1. Go to http://www.office.com/myaccount.

      If prompted, sign in with the email address and password associated with your copy of Office.

    2. Select Install.

    Office 365 for business subscriptions that include the desktop Office applications, such as:

    1. Go to https://portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx.

      If prompted, sign in with the email address and password that you created or someone in your organization created on your behalf.

    2. Select Install.

Chrome

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. In the lower-lower left corner select the o15CTRRemove file and from the dropdown, select Show in folder.

  3. Double-click the download, o15CTRRemove to run the easy fix tool.

  4. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  5. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

  6. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

  3. In the upper-right browser window, select Show all downloads.

  4. In the Library, select Downloads > O15CTRRemove.digicab, and then select the folder icon.

  5. Double-click the O15CTRRemove.digicab.

  6. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  7. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

Use the offline installer to install Office

Note: If you use Office 365 for business, contact your admin if you believe you need to use an offline installer to install Office. If you're the admin Contact Office 365 for business support - Admin Help.

The Office offline installer may help bypass potential proxy, firewall, antivirus, or Internet connection issues that might occur during an Office 2016 installation.

See Use the Office 2016 offline installer and select the offline installer for your Office version. Follow the steps for either Office 365 Home, Personal, or University, or for a one-time purchase of Office such as Office Home & Student or Office Home & Business.
