Troubleshoot sync errors in OneNote 2016 for Mac

If you’re experiencing sync errors in OneNote, here are some things you can try to resolve the issues:

Step 1: Reset the notebook that can’t sync

  1. Near the top of the page, just to the left of the section tabs, click the name of the notebook you’re currently working in.

  2. In the Notebooks list, move the mouse pointer over the notebook that’s not syncing, click the Expand button, and then click Close.

  3. On the File menu, click Open Notebook, and choose the notebook that you just closed.

  4. When the notebook has been reopened, try manually syncing the notebook.

Step 2: Identify and resolve errors in sections that can’t sync

  1. Click the name of your current notebook.

  2. In the Notebooks list, move the mouse pointer over the notebook that shows a sync error, click Sync error icon to display the error, and then locate the section that’s having trouble.

  3. Create a new section in the same notebook as the one you’re currently working in.

  4. Copy (but don’t move) all of the pages from the old section into the new one you just created.

  5. When all of the pages have been copied to the new section, click File > Sync All Notebooks.

  6. Check to see if the notes you copied also have trouble syncing or if it’s only the original section that’s still affected.

Step 3: Update OneNote for Mac

We’re continuously making OneNote better, so it’s a good idea to check if you have the latest version of the app installed on your computer.

  1. On the menu bar, click Help > Check for Updates.

  2. In the dialog box that opens, select Automatically, and then select how often you want OneNote to check for updates from now on (Daily, Weekly, or Monthly).

  3. Click Check for Updates.

Alternately, you can check for and get software updates for your Mac directly from the App Store. If updates were found for OneNote, please install them, and then try syncing again.
