Talk to family and friends on Skype in Outlook.com

Outlook.com customers can talk to friends and family with the chat, voice, and video features in Skype.

When you merge your Microsoft and Skype accounts, you automatically have access to Skype through the web on Outlook.com.

Get in touch with Skype contacts

Start a chat session with a Skype contact

  1. In Outlook.com, select the Skype icon.

  2. Select Start new conversation. You should see a list of your Skype contacts.

  3. Select the name of the person you want to talk to.

  4. If the person is available on Skype, send them a message or give them a call.

    Note: Your contact will receive the message through their Skype desktop app anywhere in the world, or, if they're using Outlook.com, through the messaging pane.

Start a video or voice call with a Skype contact
  1. If you're reading an email from a contact in Outlook.com, hover your mouse over the contact’s picture, and then select the Skype audio or video call buttons. Or:

    1. In Outlook.com, select the Skype icon. You should see a list of your Skype contacts.

    2. Select the name of the person you want to talk to. If the person is available and video or voice calls are supported, you'll see the Video and Call buttons.

    3. Select the Video or Call button to start the call.

      The first time you start a video or voice call, you’ll be prompted to install the Skype plugin. Accept the terms and conditions to install.

Notes: 

  • If your browser doesn’t support plugins, the video and voice icons won't display. Use the Skype desktop app for video or voice calls.

  • Your contact will receive the call on their Skype desktop app or through Outlook.com.

  • Voice or video calls aren't supported on Windows RT 8.1.

  • In Outlook.com, you will see the Skype icon located in the top right corner.

    If your accounts are connected then you’re already set.

  • If your account is not connected, select the Skype icon to connect your account to begin using Skype.

  • If you’ve never used Skype, you'll need to install the Skype plugin from the Windows Store. After installing the plugin, select the Skype icon in your inbox to connect your account.

  1. In Outlook.com, select the messaging icon.

  2. If you see the Skype icon at the bottom of the messaging pane, you can use Skype.

  3. Wait a few minutes, refresh your screen, and try again.

  4. If you’re still having trouble, search the community forums.

There might be a temporary problem with linking to Skype. Wait a few minutes, refresh your browser, and check again.

You can sign in to Skype through Outlook.com, People, Calendar, or OneDrive.

Currently, you can't invite people to be Skype contacts through Outlook.com or People. Use the Skype desktop app instead.

Yes. When you’re signed in to Outlook.com and Skype, your Skype contacts can contact you, and you can chat through the messaging pane. When you receive an incoming video or voice call, the Skype plugin will start.

Try again. If that doesn't work, uninstall the Skype plugin from your computer by following these steps:

  1. Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, and then select Control Panel > Uninstall a program.

  2. Select Skype Web Plugin > Uninstall or Remove.

  3. In Outlook.com, select the Video or Call button in the messaging pane. You'll be prompted to install the plugin again.

Use the Skype desktop app to block the contact and report the abuse. For more information about reporting abuse or unwanted contact on Skype, see the Skype Privacy and Security page.

To turn off notifications, select the Skype icon in the upper right to open the Skype sidebar. Next, select the audio icon on the lower right side to turn chat notifications on or off.
