Sum numbers by creating a formula

Let Excel Online be your calculator by using a simple formula. Here’s how using our sample data.

Numbers in cell A1 and B1

  1. Select an empty cell (like C1), and type an equal (=) sign.

  2. Type your first number followed by a plus (+) sign between each number you want to sum (like =54+89).

  3. Press Enter to get the formula result of 143 to show in C1.

You can also create the same formula by using cell references instead of using numbers like =A1+B1 to get the same result of 143. Or you can combine cell references and numbers like=A1+B1+20 to get a result of 163.

Tip:  When you have a lot of numbers in columns or rows to sum, try usingAutoSum.
