Introduction

This article contains information about the removal (deprecation) of the SharePoint Newsfeed app for Windows and iOS mobile devices. We will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.

More Information

On May 31st, 2017, Microsoft will remove the SharePoint Newsfeed app from both the Windows and iTunes stores.

Why is Microsoft deprecating the SharePoint Newsfeed app?

Shortly after the SharePoint 2013 release, Microsoft bought Yammer and announced that the core focus of social innovation would come through updates to the Yammer service, in addition to its ongoing integration innovation with SharePoint and Microsoft 365. Since that time, the usage of the SharePoint Newsfeed mobile apps has been low and declining, with the related decision to divert engineering resources to other aspects of the products and services.

What does this mean for existing Microsoft 365 SharePoint customers who are using the Newsfeed app on Windows or iOS mobile devices?

Customers should consider adopting Yammer as their primary social application. There is a Yammer mobile app for all platforms. For more information, see Say Hello to Yammer.

What does this mean for existing SharePoint Server 2013 and 2016 on-premises customers who are using the Newsfeed app?

For users who previously downloaded the SharePoint Newsfeed app and who could connect to their on-premises SharePoint server, the SharePoint Newsfeed app will continue to work. However, after May 31st, 2017, the SharePoint Newsfeed mobile apps for Windows and iOS will no longer be supported and will no longer receive any updates.

How will this change be communicated to Microsoft 365 customers?

All Microsoft 365 administrators whose companies are actively using the SharePoint newsfeed in Microsoft 365 received a notification of this change through the Microsoft 365 Message center.

Will Microsoft provide support for customers who have the Newsfeed app installed on their Windows or iOS devices?

Microsoft will not provide support after May 31st, 2017. If you installed the SharePoint Newsfeed app before May 31st, 2017, it will continue to work and will not be uninstalled from devices directly.

Will Microsoft fix any new or existing issues with the Newsfeed app?

No.

Is the Newsfeed service also being made obsolete?

No, only the SharePoint Newsfeed mobile app for Windows and iOS mobile devices will be removed.
