Show emoticons in instant messages Select this check box to display emoticons as images in instant messaging conversations. If you clear this check box, emoticons appear as text characters only in the Conversation area of your Conversation window during an instant messaging session. The emoticon image will continue to appear in the message entry area of your Conversation window and it will appear as an image to instant message recipients, depending on their settings.
Change the background color when the writer changes Select this option so that each time the writer changes, the background color changes so that you can more easily differentiate messages from different writers.
Show color band in instant messages Select this check box to alternate between white and blue each time the sender of the message changes. This option makes the conversation area easier to read by differentiating between senders.
Change Font Select this option to modify the font family, color, and point size applied to the instant message text. If you choose a font family that another participant's computer does not have, Communicator substitutes a font to display to the contact.
