Set up email using the iOS Mail app

Learn how to set up your Office.com, Office 365 for work or school, or Exchange email account in the built-in iOS Mail app for iPhone and iPad. You can also Set up email on the Outlook for iOS app for easy email, calendar, and contacts management instead. If you are experiencing sync issues, you can Troubleshoot email setup on mobile.

Set up your email in the iPhone or iPad Mail app

Choose from the tabs below to view the directions that apply to your type of email account.

Use these instructions if you have any @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com, @live.com, @outlook.co.uk, or any custom domain email addresses that are hosted on Outlook.com.

  1. Go to your device's Settings, scroll down to Mail, tap Accounts >Add Account.

    Note: If you have not updated to iOS 10, go to your device's Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.

  2. Choose Outlook.com.

  3. Enter your Outlook.com account email address. Tap Next.

  4. Enter your password associated with your email account. Tap Sign In.

  5. If you're prompted to enter server settings, enter the following and continue.

    • Email: your full email address.

    • Server: s.outlook.com.

    • Username: your full email address.

    • Password: email account password.

    Note: Double-check that everything is spelled correctly.

  6. Outlook may request certain permissions. To agree, tap Yes. Then choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and tap Save.

    Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

  7. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app!

If you have an Office 365 work or school account, use these instructions to set up your email with your iOS device.

  1. Go to your device's Settings, scroll down to Mail, tap Accounts >Add Account.

    Note: If you have not updated to iOS 10, go to your device's Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.

  2. Select Exchange.

  3. Enter your Office 365 email address, password, and a description of your account. Then tap Next.

    Note: Your email address should be your Office 365 business account or school account such as yourname@yourdomain.com, yourname@domain.onmicrosoft.com, or yourname@schoolname.edu.

  4. If you're prompted to enter server settings, enter the following and tap Next.

    • Email: your full email address.

    • Server: outlook.office365.com.

    • Username: your full email address.

    • Password: email account password.

    Note: Double-check that everything is spelled correctly.

  5. Outlook may request certain permissions. To agree, tap Yes. Then choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and tap Save.

    Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

  6. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app!

For email accounts and domains that are hosted by Exchange, use these instructions to set up your email.

  1. Go to your device's Settings, scroll down to Mail, tap Accounts >Add Account.

    Note: If you have not updated to iOS 10, go to your device's Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.

  2. Select Exchange.

  3. Enter your Exchange email address, your password, and a description of your account. Then tap Next.

    Note: If you aren't sure what your Exchange email address or password is. Contact your organization's administrator.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, contact your email provider for details or ask your admin. You can also see POP and IMAP settings for Office 365 for Business and go to the section titled "POP and IMAP settings for Exchange-based email" for helpful tips.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Outlook may request certain permissions. To agree, tap Yes. Then choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and tap Save.

    Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

  6. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app!
