Set up email on an Android phone or tablet

Select the type of email account you want to set up on your Android phone or tablet:

Set up email accounts ending with @outlook.com, hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com

Tip   The appearance of your Android may vary so use these steps as a guide or consult the manufacturer's help for your particular device.

Note   Outlook for Android requires a device running Android 4.0 or later. App availability varies so find out what's available in your country.

  1. Download the Outlook for Android app from the Google Play store if you haven't installed it yet.

    If you already have it installed, open it and then depending on your device, tap the navigation control at the bottom of your Android, or tap More > Settings > Add Account.

  2. On Add An Account, select Outlook.com if you have an Outlook email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com, or @live.com. This includes international domains, such as @outlook.co.uk, or any custom domains hosted on Outlook.com.

    If you have a different mail account, tap one of the other options. For example, tap Gmail if you want to add a Gmail account.

  3. Enter your full email address, for example <someone>@outlook.com, type your password, and then tap Sign in.

  4. Select Yes to let the app access your info. Outlook for Android then starts syncing the account.

  5. To view your calendar, files, or contacts from the app, tap More More options.

  6. To learn more about using Outlook for Android, tap the navigation control at the bottom of your device, or tap More > Help. Or, see Frequently asked questions about Outlook for iOS and Android.

You can also use the browser on your device to check your email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail,com, @msn.com, or @live.com email. Go to http://m.mail.live.com, and sign in to your email account.

You can have more than one account in Outlook for Android. Select the type of account you want to add and follow those steps.

Delete an account
  1. Depending on your device, tap the navigation control at the bottom of your device, or tap More > Settings.

  2. Tap the account you want to delete.

  3. Select Remove Account from Device and Remote.

  1. Tap Settings > Accounts > Add account > Email.

  2. Type your full email address, for example <someone>@outlook.com, and your password, and then tap Next.

    Note   This includes international domains, such as @outlook.co.uk, or any custom domains hosted on Outlook.com.

  3. On the Account Options page, select the options for how you want to receive your mail, and then tap Next.

  4. Give the account a name, and tap Done.

Not working? Make sure you entered your email and password correctly and try again. You can also try setting it up manually following the steps below.

  1. Tap Settings > Accounts > Add account > Email.

  2. Enter your full email address, for example <someone>@outlook.com, and your password, and then tap Manual setup.

  3. Select Exchange.

  4. If prompted, accept the defaults on the Exchange server settings page, and tap Next. If your device can't connect, update the following account information.

    • Domain\Username If your full email address is not in the box, delete what's there and type your full email address, for example, <someone>@outlook.com. If Domain and Username are separate text boxes on your device, leave the Domain box empty, and type your full email address in the Username box.

    • Password Use the password that you use to access your account.

    • Server name type s.outlook.com.

    • Make sure the Use secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked, then tap Next.

    • Tap Done.

You can also use the browser on your device to check your email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail,com, @msn.com, or @live.com email. Go to http://m.mail.live.com, and sign in to your email account.

  1. Download the Outlook for Android app from the Google Play store if you haven't installed it yet.

    If you already have it installed, open it and then depending on your device, tap the navigation control at the bottom of your Android, or tap More > Settings > Add Account.

  2. Tap Office 365 if you have a work or school account in Office 365 for business.

  3. Enter your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, type your password, and then tap Sign in.

    Note   If you previously selected Exchange to set up your account you may receive a message about security upgrades and you need to re-sign in. Follow the prompts and sign in with your full email address and password.

    Outlook for Android then starts syncing the account.

  4. To view your calendar, files, or contacts from the app, tap More More options.

  5. Once the device verifies the server settings, the Account Options page opens. Accept the defaults or select the options for how you want to receive and send your mail, and then tap Next. (You may need to scroll down to see Next.)

  6. On the Set up email page you can change the name of your account. When you're finished tap Done.

If your device can't connect make sure you typed your email address and password correctly and try again. If you still can't connect try setting it up manually following the steps below.

Set up IMAP or POP email accounts

If you're setting up an IMAP account you can use Outlook for Android. If you want to set up a POP account, use the Android mail app that comes with your device.

Note   Outlook for Android requires a device running Android 4.0 or later. App availability varies so find out what's available in your country.

  1. Download the Outlook for Android app from the Google Play store if you haven't installed it yet.

    If you already have it installed, open it and then depending on your device, tap the navigation control at the bottom of your Android, or tap More > Settings > Add Account.

  2. Tap IMAP.

  3. Type your display name, full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, your password, and then tap Next. Outlook for Android then starts syncing the account.

  4. To view your calendar, files, or contacts from the app, tap More.

Note   If you're setting up a POP or IMAP account, only your email will sync to your device. Any calendar and contacts associated with this account remain stored on your local computer.

  1. From the Applications menu, select Email. This application may be named Mail on some versions of Android.

  2. Type your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, and your password, and then select Manual.

  3. Depending on the type of account your setting up, select IMAP or POP.

  4. On the Incoming server settings page, check that your email address is correct and add the following:

    Tip   If you're not using Office 365 for business for email and you don't know the necessary server and port settings to complete these steps, contact your email provider.

    • Domain\Username Type your full email address in this box, for example, tony@contoso.com. If Domain and Username are separate text boxes in your version of Android, leave the Domain box empty, and type your full email address in the Username box.

    • Password Use the password that you use to access your account.

    • IMAP Server or POP3 Server Use the address of your server. For example, the server name for Office 365 for business is outlook.office365.com.

    • Security type Select your security type. For example, the incoming security type for Office 365 for business is SSL.

    • Port number Add the port number. For example, the port number for Office 365 for business is 993. Tap Next.

    • If you receive a message about additional security features, select OK to continue.

    On the Outgoing server settings page, add the following:

    • SMTP server Type your SMTP server name. For example, the outgoing server for Office 365 for business is smtp.office365.com.

    • Security type Select your security type. For example, the outgoing security type for Office 365 for business is TLS.

    • Port number Add your port number. For example, the outgoing port number for Office 365 for business is 587. Tap Next.

  5. In Account name type a name for this account and the name you want displayed when you send e-mail to others.

  6. Tap Done.

    Tip    You may need to wait ten-to-fifteen minutes after you set up your account before you can send or receive email.

Check what type of email account you have and other troubleshooting tips

Here's a tip to check what type of email account you have

Not sure what type of account you have? Check with your email provider. Or, if you already have the email account you're trying to add set up on a PC or Mac using Outlook try this.

  1. In Outlook select File > Info > Account Settings.

  2. In the Account Settings window check the Type column to see what type of account it is.

Troubleshoot email setup on your Android device

If you're unable to set up email on your device try the following.

  • Double-check your username and password are typed correctly.

  • If you added incoming and outgoing server settings, double-check you typed the names correctly. If you're not sure of the settings for your email, contact your email provider.

  • Try accessing your email from another computer or device.
