Use the General options to set up formatting for your instant messages and other overall settings for Microsoft Lync 2010 communications software.
What do you want to do?
Open General options
From the Lync main window, you can open the General options in one of two ways:
-
Click the Options button , and then click General.
-
Next to the Options button, click the Show Menu arrow, click Tools, click Options, and then click General.
Set instant message format
When you open General options, the selections under Instant messages determine how text is going to appear in your instant messaging (IM) window. You can choose to display graphical emoticons in messages when key combinations such as the following are typed:
: )
If you choose to show emoticons, this key combination appears as a “smiley” emoticon in the conversation window. You can also choose to distinguish between parties’ entries in an IM conversation by using alternating background shading.
The settings you specify in the Change Font dialog box apply to only the text that you type in instant messages. The font in the Lync screens doesn’t change. You can also temporarily change your font settings in a particular instant message by clicking the Change text button in the lower right of the conversation window.
Set instant message format
-
Open General options, and then do any of the following:
-
To show emoticons in instant messages, under Instant messages, select the Show emoticons in instant messages check box. To display the typographical equivalents instead of emoticons, clear the check box.
-
To use different background shading when the writer changes, select the Show an alternating background color for messages in the conversation check box.
-
To change the font of the text that you type in instant messages, click the Change Font button. In the Change Font dialog box, select a font, style, size, font effects, color, and script. Then, click OK.
-
For information about how to create and send an instant message, see Create and send an instant message.
Note that there is no spell checker function in Lync for instant messages.
Set language options
If you have many language versions of Lync 2010 installed, select the language that you want under Language.
Set quality options
If your organization has enabled the feature, you can choose to participate in the Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). If you opt to participate, your computer or device automatically sends information to Microsoft about how you use certain products. Information from your computer is combined with other CEIP data to help Microsoft solve problems and improve the products and features that customers use most often.
-
To participate in the CEIP, open General options, and then select the Allow Microsoft to collect information about how I use Lync 2010 check box.
Set logging options
Logs are used by system administrators to collect, analyze, and save data. A system administrator might ask you to turn on either of the two logging options to do troubleshooting. If you’re not asked, you usually don’t need to be concerned with these options. If you’re asked to do anything about the logging check boxes, do the following:
-
Open General options, and then select or clear the Turn on logging in Lync and Turn on Windows Event logging for Lync checkboxes, based on your system administrator’s request.
If you do need to know more about using Lync logging, see Set Logging options.
Set application window option
In Lync, when you click the Close (X) button in the upper right corner of the window, Lync keeps running so that you can receive alerts of incoming calls or messages. By default, clicking the Close button minimizes Lync to the task bar. You can choose to have the Lync window minimized to the notification area instead of the task bar by selecting the check box under Application Window.
-
Open General options, and under Application Window, select Minimize to the notification area instead of the task bar, and then click OK.
-
Click File (from the menu or from the drop-down arrow beside the Options button), click Exit, and sign back in to Lync for this setting to take effect. Now the following actions can be taken, with these results:
-
Click the Minimize button in the upper right corner to minimize Lync to the task bar.
-
Click the Close (X) button in the upper right corner to minimize Lync to the notification area.
