Run the OneDrive Troubleshooter

Some of the most common problems you might experience using OneDrive are caused by a few issues. Run the OneDrive Troubleshooter app to find and automatically fix these common issues, which might resolve the problems you're experiencing.

This article is for OneDrive with Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1.

If you need to fix sync issues in another version: Windows 10, Windows 7, or Windows Vista | On a Mac | On mobile devices

The OneDrive Troubleshooter fixes issues that cause common problems, including these:

  • OneDrive doesn't appear in the left pane in File Explorer.

  • Even though you're connected to the Internet, you can't connect to OneDrive.

  • Some of your OneDrive files or folders are missing on your PC.

  • Some files or folders won't upload from your PC to OneDrive.

  • The OneDrive icon doesn't appear in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar. (In Task Manager, the sync engine process doesn't appear.)

  • You get the message "You don't have permission to save to this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission."

Run the OneDrive Troubleshooter
  1. Click here to start the OneDrive Troubleshooter.

  2. When asked if you want to run or save it, click Run.

    You might be asked for an admin password.

As the troubleshooter runs, you'll see two buttons:

  • Send diagnostic information to Microsoft. Selecting this tells the Troubleshooter to gather technical information about any problems it may have found. It saves a log file to your desktop, in case you need to provide it later to Microsoft support.

  • Reset OneDrive. Selecting this button fixes most issues with OneDrive. It resyncs all of your files, which might take a while if you have a lot of files. Resetting OneDrive doesn't change any OneDrive settings you've already made.
