If you're seeing the 0xE0000025 error code, OneNote can't sync one or more large files because they're over the current size limit.

If you’re syncing to OneDrive, the limit for each file is 2GB. On SharePoint, this limit varies from server to server in your organization. If you don’t have permission to check your limit on SharePoint, talk to your server administrator to find out.

Removing files that are too large or reducing their size is only part of the solution. You may still need to take a couple more steps before the error message will go away.

Important: Following the steps below will remove all earlier versions and backups of your notebooks, so make sure you don't need them. After completing these steps, you won’t be able to revert to any earlier versions of your notebooks. For most people, that’s okay. But if you rely on the automatic backups that OneNote creates, make copies of your files and keep them in a safe place.

Step 1

When you delete a page or a section from your notebook, it's moved to the Notebook Recycle Bin. This feature gives you a chance to recover data that's accidentally deleted. However, when large files stay in the Notebook Recycle Bin for too long, they can cause sync errors. You can resolve this by emptying the Notebook Recycle Bin.

Depending on which version of OneNote you’re using, do one of the following:

  • In OneNote 2013, click History > Notebook Recycle Bin > Empty Recycle Bin.

  • In OneNote 2010, click Share > Notebook Recycle Bin > Empty Recycle Bin.

Note: The Notebook Recycle Bin in OneNote is different from the Recycle Bin shown on your Windows desktop.

Step 2

OneNote stores cached versions of pages so you can go back to previous versions. If you deleted a large file (or several large files), it may still be in an older version of the page. You can resolve this by deleting your notebook history.

Depending on which version of OneNote you’re using, do one of the following:

  • In OneNote 2013, click History > Page Versions > Delete All Versions.

  • In OneNote 2010, click Share > Page Versions > Delete All Versions.

After you’ve completed both steps, restart OneNote and then try syncing your notebooks again.
