Repair Office apps

There will be times when you'll have to repair the Office applications. And to do so, you'll follow the following steps. Your first step is to identify the system that the user is working on. This is simply done by accessing the Control Panel, selecting System and Security, and finally, selecting System. From here, you'll have the information about the system. As we can see in our example here we're running a Windows 10 Enterprise system. Next, you'll want to review any of the installed programs to see if one of these might be causing the issue.

To take a look at the installed programs click on Control Panel, and then Programs and Features. Next you have the option to repair Office. And to do so, within that Programs and Features list click on the Microsoft Office program and your naming might be slightly different than what you see here. Right-click on that and then choose Change. I know that's slightly non-intuitive, but that is how we get to Repair. You will have two repair options. The first one is a Quick Repair. This will fix most of your issues without an Internet connection.

If that does not work, then you'll move into the Online Repair. And this will fix all of your issues. It does require an Internet connection and it will take a little bit longer. And finally, you need to be aware that there are two installation options for Microsoft Office. First, is the MSI installation. This is the traditional installation that we've been using for years. You have to wait for the entire application to be installed before you can start using it. And typically, you'll receive an MSI Installer when you purchase Microsoft Office through volume licensing.

The new modern way for installations is through streaming. The advantage here is you can start using applications during the installation. And typically you'll have Click to Run installs through your Office 365 subscription. Now those are the general rules. But there is a way to confirm which type of installation is installed on that machine. And to find out what type of installer you have you will open up one of your Office applications, Word or Excel or PowerPoint, click on File and then Account.

Here, the product information will be displayed. As we can see in our example here our subscription product is a Microsoft Office 365 Business. Our version is 1706. A build number is included, as well as it clearly states here that this is Click to Run. Following these simple steps will help you repair your Office applications and get your users back up and running.
