Remotely wipe or erase all information from your lost phone or device

If you use your phone or device to access your mailbox, your phone or device likely stores a lot of sensitive information, such as personal identification or confidential communications.

If you lose your phone, you should immediately wipe all information from the phone. You can do that remotely by using a process called remote device wipe.

Important    You can only clear the data from a device if it was set up to use Exchange ActiveSync. If you’re not sure whether your phone was set up to use Exchange ActiveSync, you can simply try the steps below and find out. What else do I need to know?

  • If you don’t see your device on the list, it wasn’t set up to synchronize with your mailbox using Exchange ActiveSync. You can’t remotely clear the information from your phone or tablet. For example, if you had set up a POP or IMAP connection, you can’t remotely clear the information from your device.

  • If you know the person that manages your email account, and you’ve set up Exchange ActiveSync, you can have that person remotely clear the information from your phone or tablet.

  • Remote device wipe tells your account to send an instruction to your phone to delete all data the next time the phone connects to your account. After the remote device wipe process is complete, it's very hard to recover the information that was stored on the phone. However, no data removal process leaves your phone in the same state as when it was brand new. It's possible that data might be recovered using sophisticated tools.

  • For information about how to access and remove deleted items from your account, see Recover deleted items or email in Outlook Web App.
