PowerPoint 2016 says files stored on SharePoint are read-only

Issue

When you try to check out and edit a PowerPoint 2016 file in the Office 2016 desktop client and the file is stored on a SharePoint document library, PowerPoint says it's a read-only file.

Status: Workaround

This issue is now fixed in build 16.0.6965.2082 and later. To get the latest updates, click File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
