When someone sends you an instant message, by default a desktop alert appears in the notification area of the Windows taskbar. If you are using Internet Explorer, depending upon your sound settings, a sound might accompany the alert.
Note: You can disable the sound that is played any time you receive a new message. For details, see Setting Alerts Options .
To open an instant message sent to you
To accept the invitation and immediately open the Conversation window, click the alert. If you don't click or close the alert, the Conversation window will open automatically after a short delay.
To decline the invitation, in the desktop alert click Close .
